Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Limited options

What are the chances of somebody over 50 finding a good job that pays around what we are earning right now? Honestly? Is that even a possibility?

Thank you for your post @VUx39ti-2uxw. That is heartening to hear. I'm taking my chances and will go VSP vs going to infy.

50 and Rif'd 2 months ago. Starting a new job next week, only 5% pay cut (and I've been drawing unemployment + my severance). The benefits at the new company are better, even compared to what I was getting after 20 years with Vz.

It's not as scary out there as I thought it would be. I'm grateful for what I learned at Verizon but I'm more grateful to get to use it at a new place that has significantly less BS.

2 chances. Slim & none. If you take the hit now, it may be better than later. Can always find ways to make ends meet, cut expenses and get another job & start moving up the ladder again. Good luck.

55 and leaning toward package. I need to work another 3-4 years and expect to take up to a 50% hit on next salary which is ok....it beats the alternative staying at Verizon. Can I find work for $40k-$50k?

I call bs. Walmart greeters or janitors are always needed and they will hire 50+

Chances are near zero, nobody over 50 gets hired anywhere. Give up now.

AS various outplacement people explained: With a long tenure at a place like VZ, you end up earning above your true market value (this is on average of course, individuals will vary). If training has kept your skills up to date, you MAY be able to argue nearer the market, but it all depends on presentation.

As a made up IT example, if my day-to-day work has really been on legacy mainframes, but I've got AWS certifications via training, an employer may well still prefer some 25 year old who has been using AWS at a job for two years. You have to communicate that your overall experience is going to provide extra value to a new employer. And sadly, sometimes it really won't!

It’s definitely not easy. RIF’d Dec 2017, over 50, and after 10 months, finally got similar position in IT for $10k less. (I can probably make that up in OT.)

For those still looking, I would say, keep trying as there are companies out there who do appreciate older workers with knowledge.

Good luck to everybody!

If you Are 55 or older you are screwed. I know people who got burned in 2015 that were never hired. I heard a few were rehired by the company. Guess they are really screwed now.

What's dgp?

If you are an individual contributor or lower management the chance to find equal opportunity and pay at a new company is low for anyone in their 50s. Of course there may be some exceptions, but the reality is that corporate America is not looking to higher older workers for high paying positions. Just like sports or entertainment businesses, corporations are looking for people in the late 20s or 30s at their peak performance, and preferably a woman or a minority.

Anybody that says that is not reality is not 50 year old and/or has not been out looking for a job.

dgp will do just fine, thank you! dgp used Verizon for internal training and degree and also paid out of pocket for certifications instead of sitting on dgp's rear end. Thanks emj, I really hope you were not insinuating that I wil do worse. Perhaps it was a typo.

For me I’ve been recruited often but for far less money which is why I never went.

I’m not far along enough in training for something higher.

Others are and can get a job depending on if there skills are what is in demand for a high pay now.

Depends on your area and if you used tuition assistance to improve your skills through continuing education.

Total compensation depends on skill set.

VZ has great benefits, and Insosys does not.

Time will tell, some do better, some worse. I expect dgp, will do worse.

yep depends on skillset. Benefits/bonuses won't be as good unless you are working at financial institution.

Depends on what your skill sets are.

Do not cut yourself short.
