Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Metrics and numbers......

Are all we are working for now. We try to squeeze in as much customer service as the metrics allow. This regime will not be happy until we spend 100% of our time accounting for our time.

I thought everyone knew that Q does this in addition to instant message. That's why management wants you running it all the time. Just look at how much memory its using. Way too much for a simple chat app.

Also if you are worried about the key logging get a mouse jiggler. I use this when I am in the office collaborating with my coworkers so I don’t appear “idle” because god knows what kinds of reports they are running on us...

That sounds like a terrible idea. Make everyone move to collaboration zones and come into the office so they can meet and discuss in person. Then start tracking all the times their computer isn't being actively used. Forget white boarding solutions and discussing problems, just keep the measured numbers up to stay out of trouble.

Let's not forget the software installed on your PC to track every keystroke, q, email, website, system you touch. If your mouse doesn't move for 1 minute it's considered "idle", it tracks the minute you turn your machine on & off, regardless of being on VPN/LAN or not. And oh those reports that management sees monthly. Beware of big brother.

Control freaks, they are. They want to manage every scintilla of your time. Yet they do not care what you actually accomplish. I have been in the Bell System for a while. This phenomena is totally unique to Randall.

We are seeing this now with time reporting in IT. And management wants us to soend most of our time managing how and where people out there time. It’s insane.

This is definitely a company wide cancer - just look at the number of post about it should tell you something. It appears that senior management wants the functions of lower management to be migrated to a type of data driven automated management system. 1st line managers really do not manage - 1st lines are more of a gofer for tech's needs. Eventually techs will be managed by software.

The culture is so toxic here that most of us don’t even care about metrics anymore. It is what it is and if we get laid off or canned so be it. So many techs are leaving the company.

This happens in management too- expected to ‘log’ continuous learning hours, but also on own time. Never mind people let it run in the background, on mute, just to get the completion. As long as end of month shows employees are spending lots of hours on training, all looks good to VP’s!

They don't manage. They do not even attempt to develop peoples skills. You can be the worst tech or whatever, but as long as you learn to manipulate and produce those all important numbers, you are golden. Your technical ability to solve actual issues, means NOTHING. It is that pretty little spreadsheet is what matters. You can lie, cold transfer customers into oblivion and even hang up on them. And you will never be questioned. Your skills are not what you are graded on. It is your ability to dump the customer and make those FAKE numbers is what will keep you in the good graces of management. What a clusterphuck.

"This regime will not be happy until we spend 100% of our time accounting for our time." This is what happens when the folks in charge do not know how to manage.
