GE offers 18k salaried employees buyout in north America and says it may lay off if they don't get enough volunteers. boy does this sound familiar. Verizon will be doing same thing. makes me rethink that maybe I should take offer. deadline near. what to do????/

It's TRUE that managers processed work faster than the strikers, but it's also true all the difficult jobs were either outsourced or put on hold. Vz wouldn't want the fallout of managers dying or houses being burned down. Both of which has happened in the past.
@VULBHp8-1sfs most wireline guys were replaced by non technical office drones during the strike and after a week were producing nearly double the ticket clears. face it, your job is not as hard as you think it is
Been through this with another large corporation as has my wife. If there isn't a big enough take rate with the buy out, there will be an indiscriminate lay-off. If you have the time in, take the buy out. Don't fool yourself into thinking your to valuable to get whacked. If you've been there a while and making good money, you're being targeted.
A company like GM can cut allot of people and still survive. The assembly line/manufacturing groups can easily be replaced with a younger work force, but it seems they want the $$ too.
Companies like VZ would be hard to get rid of allot, even though they sent to 44k. Of course some groups can be replaced with lower wages, but the high technical teams will be hard to do. We couldn't even fill a few job opening we had for months, so even though most if not all the groups got the option only 1 or 2 would probably be affected.
Also depending on where you are all those ppl will be looking for work all at the same time. So most companies that are hiring will take their time hiring.
How about Pfizer? Are they laying off if they don't hit buyout target?
