Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

A better approach than layoffs

Quarterly layoffs combined with this big news have completely wrecked morale this year. So many little silos in the business have been trying to protect their empires of work ahead of the large changes. A better approach than layoffs...if a job is deemed no longer needed, offer the person a package or a transfer to another position within the company. At any given time there are 300-500 jobs posted and many can easily be worked remotely by taking advantage of the technology that we sell to our customers. But, alas, that is not the world we are in. Everyone is a number on a spreadsheet. In this game, low number wins so enjoy it while you can the less tenured folks on payroll.

This was posted on another thread ( @VO6sYUH-ing ), but OP’s question is valid. Why haven't they at least tried to relocate the redundant workers to other positions within the company?

Well since they are giving you STI for working 2018, not really sure how that would work except to cut the %.

The merit/raise, that's a whole mess in itself, they took the industry standards for the area and if you were above you got 1%. if you were low they gave you more to catch up. So I think at this point keeping a job and a few % raise and so called STI will satisfy most to stick around.

What's with the "added" Chief of Staff roles in Retail? Never had them before, why add ANOTHER unnecessary position?

“If they want to take $$$ off the payroll have every one from director AND ABOVE give up their STI for 1 year. That would save a lot of bucks.”

No STI for all as a 7V I’m ok with that although I’d certainly miss it I don’t depend on it.

I think managers might be most hurt.

They already messed with wage increase last year for most so non STI no annual increase if you are above a certain range.

Get rid of half of the over paid staff positions that all these VP's have , that drive them around and get their coffee , errand boys and gals, and half of the VP's that think it's their own company and just keep your loyal ones , not the tyrants that try to abuse their employees, you know who you are.

"offer the person a package or a transfer to another position within the company" - this option has always been on the table - "I know several people who have found new positions within the company", the problem is that so many positions are non-technical and most if not all of the positions posted are highly technical so your solution wouldn't work for many employees as they lack the skill needed to transition to a new group/department.

Because its not about whether jobs are still needed, rather its about taking $$ off the payroll. That may mean backfilling with younger, lower waged workers. To be fair they could eliminate some positions and allow for some lateral movement, but that would not put a big enough dent in the $$'s they are trying to save.

You know if your position is in trouble , you can apply for the openings yourself .
