Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

How is work going for those affected

With some VPs saying more people have clicked than they thought..So sounds like some folks won't be leaving (we really won't know until 12/10).. with people not knowing if they will be working come end of year.. with folks clicking and unclicking the button because they are just uncertain.. How has your worked be going? For me.. I'm almost tuned OUT! I'm continuing to work because there are things I do that really are needed by the business... But I'm not on my A game AT ALL! Hell If I'm NOT selected on 12/10.. It may take some time to get my mind right.

I opted in at 6AM the day it opened. I have enough in 401K, Pension and an IRA to be more than ready. I would have been happy with a regular RIF package so this 60/60 version is like winning the lotto. My boss knows I have long been ready to exit and has said he will not contest or try to keep me past 12/28. As far as work, I am wired to be ethical so I am still doing the right thing. I am still supporting my employees to the best of my ability and putting full effort into my job responsibilities. What I am not doing anymore is stressing about any of it. I've stopped keeping up with email 7 days a week from the time I get out of bed all the way until bedtime. Business hours only now. Man am I sleeping better and no one has died as a result of my "slackness". I also find all the ranting and raving from customers on various issues, while still needing to be addressed, does not cause me near the level of stress and angst it used to. I just apologize for their "life ending crisis" and do the best I can to resolve it. If they threaten to go over my head, I just provide them the contact info. It's like I have been given a parole date and just need to be on good behavior, adhere to the Code of Conduct and not cause any trouble for about 42 more business days. I can do that standing on my head.

It would be devastating not to be selected and very disappointing if it drags out to March or June even, getting let go Dec 10 would be amazing.

Just getting to December is a struggle, the workload is oppressive.

Out the door on 12/28 or sooner. No big deal there. Give me my package on the 10th and let me walk out right then. I’m tired of the VZ BS as well.

My morale faded long ago. My immediate work group is great but I'm tired of the endless BS! I clicked as soon as it opened and felt relief, now I'm worried they won't accept me. That will be horrible since I want to move on. I really want off this rollercoaster. Are these Corporate Geniuses really surprised by the number wanting out?! So out of touch...

That's the trick isn't it? If you volunteer you may not be taken. VZ holds all the cards. That's why there is such a short window between 12-10 and 12-28.

I predict that many that are chosen will be out the door sooner than 12-28. It is not uncommon for corporations like VZ who are concerned about trade secrets, customer security, etc. to walk people out the door as soon as the decision has been made. It limits their exposure.

Ha ha, that’s funny because I felt the same way when I first clicked the button. I was like, woo hoo come on December 28! Now it might be a possibility it won’t be until next year ( always was but higher ups asked for June), so now I’m “back” so to speak. God forbid they reject my offer!!

Quarterly layoffs combined with this big news have completely wrecked morale this year. So many little silos in the business have been trying to protect their empires of work ahead of the large changes. A better approach than layoffs...if a job is deemed no longer needed, offer the person a package or a transfer to another position within the company. At any given time there are 300-500 jobs posted and many can easily be worked remotely by taking advantage of the technology that we sell to our customers. But, alas, that is not the world we are in. Everyone is a number on a spreadsheet. In this game, low number wins so enjoy it while you can the less tenured folks on payroll.
