There will be many 55+ that take the package. They have been reducing headcount for quite a while through geographic consolidation. Go to NJ. or Texas, or you don’t have a job. Folks with ties to an area, friends and family don’t want to disrupt their life to follow a sinking ship. Moving many Ops folks have been moved to Ashburn, where you get a table with 5 others. No privacy, crowded, and conf calls are a problem. So is being cramped in with individuals that may have, er, less than stellar personal hygiene. This will ramp up if they don’t make the numbers.

Agree!! 30 weeks base period is a good idea along with years of service. I was there in this company for two years. Offer is not good to consider.

The package is not reasonable to me. If company can give 30+ weeks of package I am ready to take.

If people take the package it makes the job legal and easy for Vz. If people don't take the package it becomes more difficult for Vz. They have to go individual by individual, group by group to get to the numbers.

Nothing at all to do with current events but, in keeping with your fishing analogy, if your first cast comes up with less than desirable results you, as a wise fisherman, sweeten the deal by adding more bait to the hook, or chumming the waters more thoroughly, in order to attract the larger school of fish that aren’t biting.

Doing so results in a fuller net.

10-15% of the people offered will take the 'package' is my guess. If they need more they will go to HR to see who has had 'issues' and whack them next.

They’d flush the whole company if it meant they got their annual bonus.

Maybe they found some way to take advantage of the tax breaks and offering a juicy payout to try to get some major cuts with all the big news of super low unemployment.

Problem is they have to give us time to think. Time to find out many of our jobs are hiring at 1/3rd the rate or less than we get paid. I already knew that but I still sometimes dream of taking it and making a serious career change but I haven’t gotten up to doing 40 pushups yet.

A lot of discussion about this offer. Verizon made a tactical error. A lot of folks said if they could go next June they would take the offer. It’s all timing. I bet if the offered this annually it would gain traction. Revolutionary thinking. Verizon wants to be a technology company but still thinks like an RBOC. Hans will change this. Be interesting to see what his leadership team looks like next month.

Is it true that accepting this offer requires that you cannot seek employment in the future with Verizon?

Fishing expedition, Hmmm, I seem to remember when the employment base was around 300,000. Now, before the package, around 150,000. That would be a 50% reduction over a period of time. 44,000 out of 150.000 is only a 28% reduction that could most likely be obtained over the next couple of years. It may not happen, but the math says it could.

Don't take the package if you are over 40. Otherwise you will be McDonalds night manager for the rest of your life.

Posting the jobs by age is simply a matter of legal compliance with the requirements of the OWBPA
