I am interested to know if people who have chosen to leave, but have decided to go for a 2nd career, are interested in remaining in their field of expertise, or are going to look to taking things in a whole new direction? Good luck to all.

If selected, I plan to do both actually. Look for a job in my current field as well as start a new business (a field I've never done before). I feel if I don't start something on my own this time around, it would be stupid of me.. be ready if a corporation releases you.. Have your own thing along with that income.
If I end up leaving I hope not to get involved in what my current department does. Over the years I’ve been contacted by recruiters and every time I’ve always mentioned a group they could contact that might help find people and that if I left I’d never want a similar role so I would not be interested myself. I really should listen to myself.
@fvp, maybe we’ll pass each other while leisurely strolling along the beach’s shoreline, walking our dogs at sunset, if you’re in the LBI vicinity.

I struggled with this decision for the past two weeks, and after creating a detailed spreadsheet with various long-term scenarios (either taking the package or staying with Verizon), the numbers clearly indicate that from a purely financial perspective I would be better off staying two years with Verizon than taking the package.
That being said, this decision can't be viewed strictly from a financial basis - there are other things to consider such as what guarantees are there that I would be able to stay two years or more with the company even if I wanted to, what will working for Verizon be like after this (and potentially more) layoffs take place, how will staying with the company impact my health (you know you will be 'asked' to cover the workload of those who left - someone has to...), and what potential opportunities outside of Verizon may I miss out on if I stay?
I will be 57 years old shortly, and although I would rather have had this happen a year from now so that I could have had more time to prepare for the exit, after discussing this with my wife and kids (thankfully they are all grown and on their own) I decided my health and quality of life matter more than just money, so I pushed the green button on Friday.
I plan to go back to school and work toward a Certified Financial Planner certification and take my life in a new direction - you're never too old to learn, and change can be a good motivator to get people out of the ruts that they find themselves in.
I will definitely miss the exceptional people that I have had the privilege to work with over the past 12 years that I've been with Verizon, but I won't shed a tear for the company as I walk out the door.
I will go on living my life, with or without Verizon. If I stay I will make money and build on my future ,while I enjoy my life with my family and friends, If I leave I will enjoy my family and friends.
I’m leaving after a lot of soul searching. Kids are through college. I could probably stay a couple more years in my present role but you never know. Wake up tomorrow and job outsourced even if not in IT. I’m not happy with the tactics Verizon is using here. If they are advertising Dec, Mar, June they could at least let you choose. I know for a fact they would get more takers by giving folks time to prepare. Knowing Verizon they will rif you anyway in January if you don’t take the package. Good luck to all.
I’m 58 and taking the deal. Don’t have a passion for anything yet but who knows? I’m willing to risk it as even at my age I feel like I will always find work if I want it. Probably won’t make as much as I did at Verizon but you never know. I’m looking for the simple life now. Done collecting stuff and nesting and all that. Get me outside in the sunshine and walking and hiking and just doing whatever, whenever! I’m fortunate to not have any kids to put through college and my spouse and I don’t have any parents left either. Biggest concern will be medical coverage and a part time job should pay for that. After being affected by a previous RIF, I went into a field that was not exactly telecom, but worked telecom into my duties. Just keep this in mind. VZ paid well and gave me access to learn other skillsets to augment my last job I had with them. See if any of your other skills can take a driver's seat approach when applying for jobs.
There are other jobs/companies that offer a better work/life balance than the current VZ in 2018.
At 55+ I have no interest in another "career". If I get bored, I'll pick up a part time job or maybe volunteer somewhere. It will just be liberating to no longer have to deal with the stress that comes with a Vz job. I will remember fondly my beginnings there in the days of C&P Telephone when life was good.
