I know I am replying to this thread after a month, but why should this surplus be surprising? Didn't AT&T do the same thing last year? Trump bragged about getting his budget passed, AT&T and others announced a one-time monetary award to all of its employees, and then after those two December newsbits sent ~1800 people out the door.

I remember telling my spouse that the one-time monetary award was nice but the individual contributor awards that I had gotten 7 out of 8 of the last years was three times it. And guess what? I, and no one else that I know of under my AVP, got individual contributor awards so it was actually a loss in income. Add that the late December 2017 surplus, the Q1 & Q3 surplus, none of this should come as surprising.

I am sure they have a nice Christmas present just waiting for the lucky boy or girl.

Just be patient.

There is information that along with the 1 surplus listed, there was 5 Accounting Specialists scheduled for layoff in Birmingham Alabama, also with a layoff date of 12/29/2018

And the one guy will probably be able to get another job within the company if he wants to.

It seems like it's "mums the word" everywhere. Maybe with tight labor markets, AT&T is making sure they don't jettison people they may later need.
