I am a big opponent of crony capitalism. The "lets go socialist" argument is gaining strength given the Citizens United ads we're subjected to daily, and arrangements for price gouging, such as pharmaceuticals, where Americans pay for all the R&D, whereupon the rest of the world doesn't pay for the R&D.
This crony capitalism isn't confined between corporation and government. Taxi medallions cost a fortune in New York City, hence city government action to alleviate adverse economic affects of disruptive technologies on the taxi corporations.
So, now we hear a plea for governmental intervention in order to perpetuate an older and more expensive technology because new, disruptive technologies like VOIP and cell phone has shown up.
Well, if this is a good idea, then why stop here? Shouldn't we have the government mandate that all telephone calls, including cell be switched through a human switchboard operator, as opposed to automatic switching?
I imaging the horse and buggy manufacturers mandate horse trails or whatever. I am sick and tired of crony capitalism and those who advocate for crony capitalism, meaning a governmental intervention in order to price gouging.
Shoot - look at landline. I'm supposed to pay extra to have my number not listed? There is still this quaint concept of long distance versus local?

It would be better if POTS were required for all residential units, not just offered but mandatory. Everyone would be taxed flat rate, and the government would pay the CLEC for service. If someone refused to pay the tax, the IRS would levy a financial penalty at income tax time. A true single payer model that would keep techs working long term!
pots should be required to be offered by law and it works win nothing else do so yes i agree it got to be cheaper like $10 and universal were everyone has it in case of urgency or disasters and att make billions of dollars in profit company can afford it and just pay ceo a little less also it will help save tec jobs witch trump will like
Cant see the good liberals of California allowing the switch to be turned off as long as there is 1 elderly person anywhere that depends on it.Dont feel that the good liberals of California will even allow the copper to be sold as no buyer could possibly pay for the maintenance of those lines . I see an extended run for the wireline guys in sunny California.
I think the idea is that if everything else fails you that the wire line will still work and where as you can not make the profit of years past on the service you can add profit by offering in volume whether than phasing the wire lines out
5 nines reliability (99.999% up time) is a long dead concept with AT&T. It used to be the mantra, and there was pride in making it happen. The bean counters have found that it is cheaper to pay fines, settle lawsuits and lose some customers than it is to maintain the network to that standard. AT&T is competing with Voip carriers with 4 nines reliability that often use AT&T for transport. So yeah, a 12 hour outage is fine with AT&T as long as it is not FCC reportable, but if it is, you bet AT&T is weighing the fine vs. what it will cost to restore the outage. I used to step and fetch when there was an outage, but msoc and the realization that AT&T has much greater concerns other than what is best for customer have tempered my enthusiasm.
Came back and talk to me when you have a 12 hour or more power outage due to a tornado or other disaster about how absolete a POTS line is. Your VOIP will be so useful then. SMHIA. BTW My cellular calls have failed numerous times. I have never had a problem with my POTS line.
I think the taxes and fees, and interconnection charges and so forth is over $10.
My Voip, with nationwide long distance, under $4/month. The landline technology is obsolete.
If you gaveve landlines away for free no one would take them. The landline has gone the way of the horseshoe. Who wants POTS? People want data and that is all that matters. Not like teenagers spend hours locked in thier room talking on the phone. The 50s are long gone.
why the company would offer a c-appy $10 landline, with $40 per Hourly paid technicians? better lay them off and $ave, no pensions, Work Comp, Insurance, Benefits, etc.. it is Economics 101
We are trying to get out of the phone business. That’s what all of those lobbying efforts at each individual state was all about. Every state except California has passed legislation allowing us to abandon pots service. On California’s legislation is passed att plans to approach the FCC about turning off the switch. Good night old switch based network. It’s all going wireless. No more pesky F2 repair tickets and employees that go with it.
