Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Patterns or Perception? Who is being promoted these days?

Have you noticed any patterns in your department? You know - about who is being promoted.

Who is being promoted at level 3, 4, 5 and into SVP in your area?

How focused is the company on "diversity" rather than merit when appointing and promoting? Is it merely perception that certain demographics are being promoted and others left behind? Is there still opportunity or are changes and declarations to one's HR profile required first?

What do you think?

@3enb, Wow you used the POS abbrev. My wife would use that with my old car, especially when I had to fetch food via online...they always want to know what kind of vehicle I was pulling up in!

Take a deep breathe....in your case, take a few extra.

@3enb, I meant no true offense since I have no real ‘dog in your fight’ or argument. I happened across it.

The irony, by loose definition, was where a person (you) unlike the audience you were angrily writing to, was unaware of the significance of railing against those who would feel comfortable hiding behind an anonymous tag.....while you were.... hiding behind an anonymous post, twice..ironic, huh?

I simply noticed the “irony” and ran with it....sorry about that chief!

Hope you’re doing ok.

@3enb - My, you are full of hate. Surely you can state your opinion in a more polite manner.

Go spew your poison somewhere else.

Dear @Uvv3yuL-3vsq, which part is ironic? That I called out you and your closet racist buddies out for being such? I do this publically on the daily, no fear here.

When you voice your disgust about diversity and inclusion, do you do so openly and publicly, or do you do it behind closed doors with a bunch of people that look like you, wearing your MAGA hats? Don’t bother answering, I think I already know.

One poster said “promotions are only based on diversity now”. Really? So any time you and your kind see a minority promoted, it must be that they’re only promoted because they are minorities, right? Oh wait, they said promotions are only based on diversity. So that must mean that only minorities are being promoted these days. So, if a whole group of minorities are promoted, then that clearly is due to diversity, and not because all of those individuals were more qualified than non-minorities. Do I have it right now?

Let’s just call these folks that are complaining about diversity what they really are, closet racists who don’t want to see minorities succeed or hold positions of power or influence. If you see the numbers of minorities that are promoted increase and assume that’s only due to diversity, not their qualifications, and not that prejudices and biases are finally being lifted, then you’re a POS and are exactly as I have described you.

i never meant to bring race into the issue by asking if this person did these patents by herself. but i find it interesting only her name is on the patent when there are a lot of moving pieces to make the accomplishment.

Aww look at all the closet racists so upset with non-white folks getting opportunities that they feel belong to their own kind. What, the hundreds of years of dominance in authority positions not good enough for you? Wonder how many of you racist cowards would be comfortable posting your feelings without being able to hide behind the anonymous tag?

Age discrimination is only a part of the whole diversity situation.

@1uwi. It's age descrimination. Att is well know for it. Google it. The case is out there and just last May a court ordered att to face the music. It's not diversity...it's age descrimination that dictates positions.

@ivpg, think you have us confused. In one sentence you said “wish I could live my life and not worry about losing my job so much.” You ended by saying, “glad I got out.”

Like my ol’ Grand Pappy use to say, “if it writes like a troll, and acts like a troll” well, I think you can guess the answer....

Well I must be an exception to this diversity thing. I am a minority, BS and MBA, in technology for almost 30 y ears. I have applied to area managers and director jobs. I had 2 years of management experience. I have not had an interview for any in years. Maybe i need to have a sponsor. I lost out for an area managers job to a drunk that is never available and whose subordinates dislike him, and BTW he is white. I will hasten to add that I am not bitter, i stopped applying for those jobs. In fact i stopped applying for jobs inside of ATT. I dont hate the company, i do see some of the things people on this blog complain about. It saddens me but I understand its human nature. ATT will survive, it will be much smaller (remember in the 1990s under Armstrong how he bulked up and then had to shed divisions?). I am running a side business and am looking forward to being eligible to retire. If I am surplussed i wont be fearful as I have a solid plan B.

There was an open DOS position- our AVP told his entire DOS and ARSM team on a call" if your not black, female or both do not apply for the position". They lady that got the job was absolutely awful. She had 3 ARSMs reporting to her and turned them all over 2.5 times in 2 years. Att promotes based on race and gender and they are. It afraid to say it.

I don’t work for AT&T but have many friends that do and wow, some of what I hear is almost difficult to believe but I do . Clearly reverse discrimination and that’s just wrong. AT&T has really lost their place in the industry and doesn’t sound to me they will revover. There are jobs out there including in telecom roles not just other carriers but companies who need people to manage mobility functions . Take the money and run. Slam the door and never look back. Best of luck to all.

Total bull sh-- hiring, race is a huge factor and it's sad because it's just racism toward the majority and not the minority and all racism should be wrong. This company is going downhill fast. Wish I could live my life and not worry about losing my job so much. Where is the motivation? Call centers have racial agendas that are obvious as hell too, glad I got out.

A bunch of “I’m angry and I’m not going to take it anymore” folks in this post. “Check her CV”, “Others probably did her patents”...geez what’s next?....check her birth certificate? Need to pass out the MAGA hats?

@1rpq: ha. That’s funny. My director said on a call full of first levels that the company is looking at race when deciding to whom opportunities are given. So as a white male I WILL be discriminated against for my “white privilidge”. Ok he didn’t say all that but the first sentence he did. It’s complete b---s---.

T would be smart to be very careful with the so called diversity when deciding promotions or layoffs.

Ain't no promotions in the areas of what used to be TP&E or in TechDev that I work with. Haven't seen anybody able to translate their nanodegrees or other TU training into opportunities to change where they work in the organization either. I have seen a lot of the level 3s in particular pushed out and not replaced, both as ICs and as Supervisors. The people who have applied for positions aren't getting any kind of acknowledgement unless they happen to be in one of the mentoring programs, and even there anyone over 40 or who can't check off at least one of the various diversity boxes aren't going anywhere. From where I sit I only see one career path for most of ATO and that's out the door.

You hit the nail on the head. Diversity overability AND promoting friends. Management is the downfall of this company: T needs a creative CEO who can lead and think strategically, a CFO who can talk to the market thT the market respects, someone with marketing skills to heD upstrategy as both Donovan and Stankey were failures. 3 of the 4 operations heads are in over: Stankey took DTV down the tubes the turned it over to Donovan who can't fix it and has wireless failing to compete. Stankey has no background in media creation and will let Warner Media disintegrate as well. Lori Lee's biggest accomplishment was at birth when she was born a woman. To survive T needs massive change at most top leadership

No voluntary offers should be made. If you aren’t doing your job and in some cases incapable of doing the job due to lack of required skills you should be gone. There are enough of those to meet the numbers. Then for those left, treat them with respect and T may have a chance. Now employees coming etitird snd other outside the company think T is a joke and it is the titanic.

Level 3 and 4 are being shuffled like a deck of cards moving lateral. My SCVP I was under for 13 years moved to service management then to compensation with in the 1 year and 1/2 I have been gone. lvl 2 direct reports are the same and having to live up the backsides nose first of lvl 4 and 5 to be seen. If you are lower level 2 or so with 4 or higher mentor or a child of an executive then you might move up.

I don't know anyone that is being promoted. I think most people are just trying to keep their job. AT&T is in a big 'layoff' mode due to 2020.
