Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

What is happening to this company?

I know there’s going to be a lot of haters but this just blows my mind. I’ve been at two different garages the past 6 years and both were the same. There’s always a few guys that come in late everyday. Not a couple of minutes, but 10-20 minutes late EVERYDAY! The boss is oblivious. These same guys leave 10-45 minutes early almost daily. When the boss is on vacation, they leave an hour or more early. They only (work) about 7 hours a day. It ticks me off that most of us have to stay here for 8 1/2 hours and these clowns only stay for 7. It’s been going on for years, so the boss can’t be blind to it. Morally, you can’t point it out to the boss or your a rat, but you would think that eventually they would get caught...but they never do. These are the same guys that go grocery shopping on the clock, go home to play video games for a couple hours, and rarely are where they are supposed to be...leaving the rest of us to pick up the slack! Truly amazing!!

OMG!!!

Everyone else works 8 and 1/2 hoursa day!? Yes, 8 hour day with a mandatory half hour lunch.

No forced OT no voluntary OT!? Haven’t been forced since hurricane Sandy. NO REGULAR overtime in years.

Where is this fantasy garage!? NJ

Entire post is a load of BS. GPS anyone? They ignore it or don’t use it....todays mentality is if a manager fires someone for not being where they are supposed to be, the manager gets a black eye also for letting it happen on his/her watch, so they cover it up.

Anti-union horse-sh-- posted by a mo--n. The union protects those that should not be protected. Some people that the union gets their job back do not deserve the job. They should bring in someone who actually needs a job and wants to work.

5 more years of excellent benefits and pay has a way of making people jealous. Jealousy is not a valid reason for allowing some people to get paid just for showing up at the garage (late) and driving off in a company vehicle to run errands all day. Having a good paying union job used to be something to be proud of, not today...the union protects those who aren’t worth it...but I guess you think that once you get into a union, you don’t have to work. Aren’t we special. It is a slap in the face to those workers who have to pick up the slack.

Move along. Nothing to see here. Unfortunately you are correct, the company (1st,2nd level managers) turn a blind eye.

I wasn't born anti-union. I come from a union state. But then I had to work with union people and found many of them had a different work ethic from what I was raised with. It was almost like someone started out with a group of dedicated workers who didn't complain too much and then mixed in all the stoners and assorted losers we grew up around. So then you were left with people who got the job done surrounded by all kinds of hangers on who weren't worth c-ap. That is my experience with union people. You'd think this would piss off the union hard workers. Maybe it does or maybe they just ignore it. I just remember being told that once you got into the union you were safe and didn't have to work so hard. Doesn't sound very American.

The was how many of the union people operated where I used to work. I was specifically told to slow down because I didn't need to work so hard. Unbelievable. Of course they had seniority and they kept their jobs.

I don't diss all union people because many have a conscience and do a good, even great job. But there are many who don't deserve to work here. I don't care if they have 30 years.

@ikgo as stated the manager is culpable. A one time variance may be justifiable but systematic scamming is wholly a managers fault. One discussion with the individual without any escalation should have cured the problem. If not one reaps what they have sown. The data is all there as you state. All it takes is someone in charge to seek it out. People adapt to what the boundaries are. If their are none the manager has enabled even to a degree condoned the behavior. One doesn't need to be a scumbag to keep order but they must demand responsible behavior and not tolerate fraud.

@1kiz, A few years ago in our garage, we had a guy who used to go home and play video games all day, then close out his jobs that he never went on. He did this for a long time. The only reason that he got caught was because the maintenance guy at the apartment complex where he lived had told him to not park his Verizon bucket truck by the dumpsters. This id--t told him to screw off, and continued to park there. So the guy calls Verizon to complain. Only then did they check gps to confirm where this guy was. They also checked to see which cell towers were pinged when he closed out his jobs, and it was the one closest to his home for every job. His workload had him about an hour and a half north of his home. I think the union even got his job back, but he never reported back. So the OP may be correct, the bosses don’t always look at gps unless they have a reason to.

I worked a job where no one did anything and it made me sick to work there. What you're feeling is your conscience. It means you were destined for more and should pursue it. The people leaving early lost theirs. It doesn't make them bad and they need the money like the rest of us slaves, so don't rat or feel like U have to. If you take pride in your work, it will help them take pride in theirs

BS. All one needs to do is look at GPS data. They have the ability to ask why you pulled to the road for 7 minutes after 2 PM three months ago on the 6th. They can go back at least 6 months worth. They micro manage utilizing this tool to the point that it hurts productivity. It causes techs to be unwilling to prematurely complete a job function out of fear of questions as to why they proceeded elsewhere etc. If people are doing what you are saying management is out and out culpable up to at least the 3rd level of your district.

There is plenty of laziness to go around. Yes it can bring down moral as these same individuals are making the same salary to basically do nothing while the rest have to pick up the work. Make an anonymous call to ethics. Anyone who says you're a loser is the apparent loser. There is no excuse for the behavior when they are getting a check every week for doing absolutely nothing. Management should be fired for allowing the lazy attitude to exist. The laziness exists at the management level but the difference is that many times it doesn't impact anyone but that individual which most times leads to them getting rif'd.
