well i hope the layoffs came at the redundant management level. their jobs seem to overlap in all dimensions.

Original poster, what exactly is the "redundant management level"? For yourself and others that don't understand, management layoffs have been going on for quite some time now. Problem is they have mainly been at the L2 level. Sure, there are ineffective folks at L2 level, but overall at this level these people are still key contributors. Laying off at L2 and the inevitable reorgs that occur afterwards cause chaos in the affected organization. Again this has been going on for years. And the Donovans of the world wonder why we aren't "agile" enough. They need to cut L3 and L4 as deeply. There are too many Directors and way too many VP's; take a look through Webphone sometime, it is completely ridiculous.
Many managers are wearing two hats--getting paid for one: 1) manager and 2) tech support. If you take away the first line manager the bargained tech would be lost. Why? Because over the years these technician jobs have been dumbed down to the point where the technician doesn't have to think, so when a curve ball is thrown at them they call their 1st line for help. Not a lot 1st lines make more than their technicians, but are required to be chief cook and bottle washer for them. If you really want to affect the company's bottom line cut craft--do more with less as they say.
@UrHbwVb-1idm Ok let's play a game...of the ATO pre-reorg, what percentage of NPE, ATS, C&E and GNOC were wireless, what percentage was wireline and what percentage was Core? Furthermore, what percentage of CTO support wireless? How about CDO, any wireless personnel in there at all? How about COR? How did you breakout the percentage that each sales employee spends time supporting DirectTV/DirectTV Now or Uverse? Did you run the numbers? Who is M. Knight and how do they figure into this topic? No clue? Didn't think so.
The analysts and telecom sites (FierceWireless, RCRWireless, Lightreading) have given up trying to compare apples to apples (headcount) but I guess you have run all of the numbers, right?
I have worked in Wireless Engineering 20+ years with half of those at AT&T...I have forgot more about this industry than you've ever known.
Now to some real layoff news. ATO VP (affected/non-affected) calls are expected Monday along with MVO numbers.
I was only talking about wireless with T-Mobile so please educate yourself about our industry. Again we have over double the admin staff and triple the managers.
Management Layoffs are happening - Level 2 and 3 are the next targets
Level 4 that were leaving took the MVO and are out
Above that the packages are so sweet - its all politics, which shows in the company performance
Here we go with T mobile again. Tell me ‘ole resentful one, why does AT&T have so many more managers in the west? Could it possibly be because t mobile and Verizon only offer wireless service in the west? (Hint: Wireline, Directv)
The west has way to many mangers and support staff. Over double what T Mobile and VZW have.
Wow, why the hate? I dont know about your area but many managers with and without direct reports have been laid off in the company.
