Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Been in the industry for 25 years, and AT&T has the worst mid-level and upper mid-level management I’ve seen

I’ve worked for TWC, Comcast, Sprint, T-Mobile and now AT they’re filled with petty, shortsighted yes-men and women that do more in-fighting and posturing than the rest of the company combined. They’re toxic to the core and are harming the organization. They make terrible business decisions that are only bested by the even more terrible hiring decisions they make whenever headcount is made available to them. To an extent, there are problems at level 2 but they don’t have enough power to create real and lasting damage like the people with budgets and strategic oversight. Sure, they can chase good employees away, just not at the scale of level 3 and 4.

The good news is that, at least at a corporate level, things seem to be changing. The bad news is that it will be 3-5 years before the trash is removed. And who knows how much damage will be done by then. My guess is “substantial.”

Leaving T-Mobile for AT&T got me significantly more pay at a director level, but my peers, and the AVPs I report to, are truly terrifying because they’re dumb AND mean, and they have zero business acumen.

The company made a very smart move by walling off the WarnerMedia organization, because if those creative types got a taste of what Mobility and Entertainment was cooking, they’d be out of the door as soon as humanly possible.

Spoken like a T-lifer with no ambition. You know company-hopping is what gets you massive raises, right? Then again, you actually have to have a skill set.

There is No team work at T, nothing. There is no mgt. training at T just corporate propaganda. The guys that do All the real work at T have zero involvement with management and this is by design, so there is no sharing of ideas or camaraderie leading to any semblance of team work and good will. The new CEO when they get here ,needs to scrub out the stank of the last 15 years and give the managers and workers a reason to care again. Not holding my breath !

"I’ve worked for TWC, Comcast, Sprint, T-Mobile and now AT"

I'm wondering which party didn't work out, company or employee.

@1byu "Image is everything."

I think so too. And pay to play with Mike Cohen, and being in cahoots with NSA spying is killing their image, and probably killing sales. They have a lot larger image problems that whatever is being said over here.

The Time Warner thing is funny. So many AT&T employees were probably thinking there would be job openings posted all over for Warner Bros and HBO until they put up the electric fence.

Wanted: Retail employees with terrible attitudes, fraudulent DTV Now sales and whiny union reps. We need you to come to Hollywood and hang out with movie stars.

LOL. Morons.

Then again, they probably have just as much experience in entertainment as Stankey.

You might be surprised at what is being looked at by AT&T. A pretty sensitive company in many ways. Image is everything.

On the off chance that someone with some influence in the company is reading this: please start dumping the 3 and 4 level leaders. They're so bad. Most have zero skill sets. They steal credit and destroy morale and backstab each other and the people below them that are good. Most have been in their roles for too long and are just way too comfortable.

Inspired and Engaged was a good start but many people are afraid of the consequences if they speak up.

Ball is in your court HR and senior leadership.

Good post, very accurate, upper management has their heads way up their own a--, they have no idea what's really going on.

There is nothing magic about Google, they are just a well managed company. There is nothing evil about T, it is just so poorly managed that it has become toxic.

But Randy is destructive, he is steering a once hugely successful company right in to the ditch. He and his cronies will get buckets of money but the employees and the stockholders will suffer.

This is my first corporate job after getting my degree, so I have nothing to compare it to. My first position was good until I realized it was like Hotel California - you can't get out. Had upper mgt refusing to let people move, using the excuse of 'needs of the business'. Nothing close to the supervisor support they tout in the LWD seminars. Years later, an AVP heard our plea and announced to 3's we were all releasable. I was able to get into another org, where strangely, I began to notice the same thing was going on. Job security was due to the fact that no one else would be able navigate the inefficient ways things were run. Through attrition, I ended up with a title I shouldn't really have, and no support to actually work my way into earning it. People say it's better outside T, but you hear people from all companies complaining, so it's a leap I've not explored too seriously. The hassle of changing jobs, with all the paperwork and likely a steep pay cut (T pays well, and doubt I could get a job somewhere else with the same title...) only to find the same issues ... I'd be back on stress medication. Maybe I'm just worn out.

The Company is not smart for walling off Warner, they had to b/c the Gov't appealed the Merger. Don't give them ANY credit. It's not deserved.

This was the most accurate and articulate post I have read on this blog. This place is the most toxic environment I have ever experienced and it will bring AT&T to its knees sooner than later. Excellent point on Warner. Stankey running the company is a joke! I expect to see many leave Warner despite the fact they say they are operating independently. The board , Randall, Stankey, Donovan and several down the line must go for this acquisition to be successful and for T to hope to salvage what’s left. I’m disgusted by the way ‘management ‘ behaves! I use the term management very loosely and don’t know one I could call a leader.

they are paid well to screw over the employees at all costs, and they are pretty damn good at it.

My friends and I are always amazed by the id--ts that make it to director and higher. And the worst thing is once those people are there, they are set and they protect each other.

Hoping for some major layoffs in 2018 for these people.
