I got a big promotion today. I think my newly created position is safe from any RIF, At least I hope so LOL my manager knew i was not happy in my current position, so he made it happen. Keep working hard for your opportunity and goals at VZW....

A promotion doesn’t protect you against a RIF. I was promoted and nominated for 2 employer awards within 12 months of being laid off. I know several others who were promoted within months prior to losing their jobs.
Your manager doesn’t decide who gets cut. It’s done by a consultant based on salary and job duties and, to some extent, the ridiculous drive to diversify the workforce. If there’s someone out there who can do an adequate job for less or if a minority from a merger has similar job duties and they don’t need redundancy, you’re toast, even if you are a real ace at your job.
Watch for your manager to get Rif'd, you will be next without that safety shield around you.
When they eliminate that newly created position, you may not have a job to go back to. I've seen it happen way too often with newly created positions and "special" projects.

obvious you have never been a manager of people. if you are truthful and not a troll, employees that are unhappy but difficult to get rid of during a time of layoffs are promoted to a position that mgmt knows will be eliminated in the next round of layoffs. this is done to eliminate any potential eeoc action. the hook is hanging on your lip. best wishes!
