Verizon Reaches New Labor Deal

https://www.morningstar.com/news/dow-jo ... -deal.html

Verizon Communications Inc. reached a tentative agreement with unions representing more than 30,000 employees, the parties said Thursday, a move likely to avoid the work stoppages that have plagued past negotiations.

The four-year agreement covers pole climbers, call-center representatives and other staffers in Verizon's landline business, which includes its Fios TV and broadband services. During the previous round of negotiations, in 2016, some 40,000 workers went on strike for 49 days.

The workers covered by the new deal are represented by the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Their current three-year agreement runs through 2019 and the new agreement will take effect after that, running through August 2023.

The tentative deal includes 2.5% wage increases in 2020 and 2021, a 2.75% increase in 2022 and a 3% increase in 2023. It is subject to approval by the unions' members in August.

Verizon approached the unions to negotiate in recent months, beginning talks earlier than in past negotiations.

"We saw this as an opportunity to make improvements for our members without the lengthy conflict we experienced two years ago," Ed Mooney, vice president for CWA District 2-13, which includes Pennsylvania and Virginia, said in a written statement.

Seven out of the past 10 contract negotiations between the parties have resulted in strikes, leaving workers without paychecks and senior Verizon managers working overtime, climbing poles and manning call centers. Past strikes have resulted from disagreements over health-care costs, retirement benefits and job outsourcing.

"We believe this contract extension is good for both Verizon and our employees, and will allow us to continue to focus on our customers without any distraction," Marc Reed, Verizon's chief administrative officer, said in a memo to employees Thursday afternoon.

Verizon, the largest U.S. wireless carrier by subscribers, employs 154,700 workers.

I appreciate the efforts of all involved in negotiating, on both sides of the table. I know it’s not easy, dealing with uncertainty and second guessing yourself.

I also appreciate when we do not have to strike to reach a fair agreement, though I am always willing to stay out as long as it takes if we’re going to otherwise get beat up.

To be honest, I am disappointed in the raises and rapidly escalating healthcare costs being passed on to the Union member under this new agreement.

There was a time, not so long ago, in which 3% raises each year were commonplace. I understood that, during lean years, such as in recessions, maybe 3% was unattainable. However, the economy’s booming now, there’s a politically favorable climate for industries currently, there’s so much fewer of is now than there were in the early 2000’s, the fiber’s less costly to maintain than the copper was, and a lot of work previously done by others is now my responsibility. My tablet makes me not only an outside field tech, but I am now also a clerical administrator, a foreman, an engineer... Please don’t misconstrue this as a complaint about the new work load. It’s more a commentary on the fact that I think, with more and more responsibility, there should be an equitable increase in the worth of that labor.

As a side note, I was shocked to learn after the last strike was settled, after having been out 49 or so days, that concessions that had been made at the bargaining table before we walked, remained intact. This seemed odd, and I wondered why we were out. Now, it’s easy to second guess people. I know that. I also know that I an not at the negotiating table, but it does make one wonder. I wish we were told prior to going out that paying for medical was already written in concrete. I also wondered about the timing of the calling of the strikes end, as many were about to get unemployment benefits after 6 weeks of suffering.

But, again, I’m not there.

It’s not uncommon that I’ve come through a strike in the past with an understanding that certain things had been accomplished, only to find out later that they had, in reality, not been.

I am not a troll. Just wondering why, at times, we do what we do.

And, to reiterate, thank you for giving it your best. It’s easy to take potshots, be a Monday Morning Quarterback, and to criticize. It’s gotta be hard as hell, the weight of having to negotiate uncertain waters on your shoulders.

Thank you.

If you want to test your memory, try to recall what you were worrying about one year ago today.

It's like the old man who said on his deathbed that he had had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened.”

I don't know about you but I'm ascared. The pay raise no layoff proof status and increased pension are all fine and dandy, but I fear getting sold. What will I do should I just retire when that happens? This is very worrisome. I had hoped a 5 year contract would be good news. this really s---s!

There are a lot of butthurt trolls out there. Its all good. No one has the means to buy the footprint and only a fool would sell it and lose control of their destiny. The contractors will not be in areas who have representation only the scab areas. Lets continue to rake it in brothers and sisters.
