Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Profit at all cost

Sometimes I wonder just how far are those on top ready to go due to their own greed, and they never fail to move the bar even lower every single time I think they reached bottom.

I'm hoping in vain they'll realize one of these days that profit at all cost will destroy the company in the end, which will amount to no profit at all for anybody, including them.

Preach ethics, then show employees what lying hypocrites you are every single day. Unethical. Liars.

Tell your employees that safety is #1, but if they express concern over safely they are disciplined. Tell employees that customer service is #2, but price gouge, charge them as much as you can get away with and hope you dont get got. Give me a break, they lie steal and cheat, anything to prop up the stock so the executives can continue to basically steal bonuses. Worst company ever. Run by incompetent Hicks. Randy did not earn his job, it was given to him by his father in law. Pathetic.

Unless it is a private company again Profit will always be #1 for this or any other company. The companies have a fiduciary duty, legally enforceable, by shareholders to do what is best for the company and profit.

Realize that when you wish a company ill you also wish all the employees that same ill will. Employees that dump the service from their own company out of spite and then complain about layoffs etc are kinda dumb.

Technology and work has changed, having pity parties and playing the victim may be fun but they don't accomplish anything.

@1hlh, really? hmm, lets see. 1) more cord cutters causing decline in video subscribers. 2) more millennial especially not having home phone lines. wow, I guess you are an expert in the communication arena. where is this "boatload" you speak of? VZ has sold its landline to companies like frontier. do you actually read the earnings releases of the companies? (not just ATT but VZ etc). SMHIA. so much ignorance being displayed on this blog. as an old eastern provers say "he who knows not and knows not he knows not is a fool shun him" I really don't know whats the answer, and maybe ATT is doing the wrong things to increase revenue. time will tell. What I do know is no one so far on this blog has the right answer either.

ATT is looking more like GE over time. Just a decade behind their schedule. More and more acquisitions, no clear single purpose for the huge company, and murky accounting across business units to hide the real story.

There is a boat load of money still to be made off the " old technology " .It pains me to see Randall chasing pipe dreams every year.It pains me that Randall thinks so little of the blue collar workers in the company that he took away our team awards to show that he can .I for one am looking forward to new leadership or the wireline business being sold off to people that appreciate the potential that still exits ,but is no longer being nurtured.

While I agree that from a technological standpoint - this company relies too heavily on ancient systems. Phones are over 120 years old and exist in fewer than 18% of homes. DSL based Internet was never designed for nor can it provide the bandwidth that the modern connected home requires to function. You mentioned DirecTV - putting aside the dubious wow factor of the Genie2, it still remains basically the same platform it was when they still used Hughes boxes in 1992.

All of these technologies are ancient by modern standards. No wave of VC money flows towards graveyards such as these. Your typical AT&T investor is the same today as they were when my Grandparents worked for Southern Bell in the 40's - phone company retirees and ultra-conservative funds focused on a dependable dividend. Soundly safe to be true - but that demographic of investor is dying off by over 10,000 people a day.

If you really did listen to John Stankey, what the focus will be on is "targeted advertising". This company wishes to move from a technologically based enterprise to a service based industry.

Technology evolves faster than an entrenched Bell Head outfit can ever hope to do. Since we can't run as fast, then drop out of that race and focus your energies elsewhere

I sense the focus will be an extensive and intrusive data mining of our customers. We will record their actions on a level par with the NSA. Take that individualized information and sell it to the highest bidder so that seller can cram your inbox with ads about everything you have looked at, searched for, or thought about.

All in hopes that you buy some piece of crap.

Might just work - people are stupid so never underestimate that fact of nature.

From an investor standpoint, I would be more concerned about the 173 billion debt load in light of the Federal Reserves intention to continue a 4 times per year increase in the basis point interest index. The cost of Randall's shopping spree will only increase in cost over time.

In the end, what this company has is an one hundred year old technology called landline, a pitiful DSL network that dates back to 1997 with throughput speeds that are frankly comical in terms of modern usage and demand. Cellular - great if you live in some Metro hellhole, but live in the densely populated and popular estate country side of millionaire vineyard owners and your half a bar of signal doesn't win many converts.

You bought DirecTV and promptly began dismantling it's previously award winning GUI in favor of some 12 year-olds first attempt of using Excel. You offer streaming that daily has issues - yes, I read the Cadie files every morning. If we were Netflix in 2002 I could buy the clunky ineptitude, but 2018 - surely we can hire talent better than what we currently have.

My other issue is Stankey's recent pep talk to HBO where he all but demands a shift from quality niche programming that traditionally sets the industry bar for creativity in favor of a quantity dump of daily garbage so he can record eyeballs per hour versus eyeballs per season. No different than Donovan's predictable last two weeks of the quarter push to cram as many bogus upgrades and BS new installs onto the Field as they can to pump the numbers for that quarter.

Gimme the numbers so I can hoodwink the Investors.

Only to be followed a week later at the SEC disclosure with the usual announcement that we lost another 100,000 wireline, 100,000 DSL and 300,000 TV viewers that same quarter.

But trust us guys, 5G gonna be HUDGE!

AT&T is pretty good in seeking volunteers, using financial incentives to reduce force. And they're a dividend stock instead of a growth stock because they have a dying business, namely, landline telephony. And automation is contributing to headcount reduction, but their competitors are automating too.

And, while they might be trying to save a dime on temps, AT&T also uses temps to cushion force reductions among regular employees.

Yet, despite the various posts indicating mass layoffs, the sky is falling, etc, the layoffs at AT&T are light, considering their 250,000 population.

"leadership" is nothing but a bunch of iiars and back stabbers .... if you can prove yourself one you too could be one of the "elite" and start writing about how great the company is.

I have nothing against companies making healthy profits. But AT&T made $38.04 billion in the first quarter of 2018. Yet it's cutting jobs--and cutting corners--to make its bottom line look even better. At what point is it enough? At what point do companies stop worrying about squeezing out an extra few million to make Wall Street analysts happy and start investing in their employees to keep them happy? Yeah, if you're unhappy, you can leave. But it's less expensive for companies to keep employees than train new ones, and it's often hard to replace the skills and knowledge that walk out the door when a good veteran worker gets fed up with being treated badly. If you love begging execs to let you lick their hubcaps clean, fine. But the rest of us prefer to be treated like humans with brains and dignity and, yes, value.

@cfo If Washing Randy’s car is my job I would do it with joy in my heart and a huge smile on my face and ask what else I can do. Sure I may aspire to do more and I would seek ways to do more what ever it is.

I have a side business and I’m so thankful I get to hear and learn from leaders in that business who started at the bottom. Many of them are millionaires but they never forgot where they came from.

If you don’t like working here than leave. Wishing it to fail means thousands of us out on our butts you idiot. I have a good job here and I would like to keep it. Yea this company can improve a lot, but wishing it to fail is stupid. Profits equal paychecks I’d like to keep mine thank you

Lemme see, Randy has 249,000 employees, provides adequate pay, and in some instances, excellent pay, good health benefits, good 401K, pays dividends to thousands of shareholders, and has kept the party going.

Nationwide, there was a record number of quits last month because with this job market, people think there are greener pastures elsewhere.

So, if anyone is dissatisfied with AT&T, it might just be the time to grab one of these payouts to leave the payroll and get a job elsewhere.

There are jobs out there, from Dow Chemical, to Bloomberg to a local plumbing firm that is willing to train. UPS is advertising on television for applicants. There are all kinds of jobs. I was listening to the Dow Chemical guy, someone with an associate's degree - willing to train.

This isn't going to last forever. So, if AT&T isn't working out for you, might want to take a look elsewhere.

So I am wondering if you ever turned down a raise or bonus? I’m assuming you are getting paid or do you go to your boss and say you will work for free? Grow up. If you think it’s easy to run a company why don’t you go start one then? Sigh. Is att the best ? No way. They screw up a lot. If they had not then things would be great. But I bet there would still be people like you who whines. Amazing.
