Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Summary of questionable business decisions Costing a lot of people there careers

We were the best. We had the most customers. We could stand by the network. All we had to do was continue with the winning formula. Having the best Service. Not providing terrible products (physical or digital). Rumor had it we lost the original Apple deal because we wanted a piece of the App Store. Which led to vcast… Then the Triple H Hub, Hum, Hpc! HPC Isn’t a bad product; however, you can’t anticipate every single person to walk out the door with one. Sounds like current hum expectations. When you expect sales representatives to sell a niche product to everyone you will get escalations, ghost lines, and aggressive shady sales tactics. These unethical sales tactics are always swept under the rug creating a negative snowball effect by inflating numbers. For instance a free Ellipsis 7 tablet, another terrible product, was pushed on every customer's account by bundling with loyalty plans, or used in Gimmicks to save an unlimited data package or to buy a phone at a 2-year subsidized rate.

Could you imagine if VZW had only focused on providing the most amazing Network and only carried quality equipment? What would happen to call in rates, return rates, NPS, Occ's. Then the purchase of failing internet companies AOL and Yahoo. Could you imagine if we spent that money on network infrastructure and network / Machine-to-machine R&D? Could you imagine if that R&D led to current products in Verizon connect (Fleet Management, hum) or one talk, and actually worked near perfectly?

Can we just focus on being the absolute best again? If you're in an ivory tower please make decisions based on 1 customer experience 2 absolute quality 3 positive employee environment/ culture from top to bottom. Stop building boiler rooms.

I might be on the front line, but I used to think I had a wonderful techy Interpersonal career that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, I have been forced to start weighing my options and everyone says that is what you want.

FIX THIS.. OR CONTINUE THE BS AND OUTSOURCE RETAIL ALREADY.

Op stated the case for VZW driving the shady culture. All we are asking for is our jobs, and to stop being squeezed. Stop squeezing and change the culture.

Hey 2i0j:

Another Network employee here. VZW will not be outsourcing to Ericsson Network Maint. They would find out very quickly that it would be akin to herding cats. VZW like to drive their own projects and schedules, and Ericsson, even if they thought they could work that way, probably can't. VZW needs all their Network folks on deck for the 5G build. In fact they are probably going to have go hire more. But after all the Network RIFs already done, where are they going to come from?

LoL you must not work for VZW... Indirect is a sh!t show. You are much more likely to be swindled there. We only have indirect agents at malls in my region. Direct retail is strong when given the right tools.

Please explain how domestic outsourcing is good for anyone; besides the short term savings.

Ps These are people's lives... People that have taken pride in their quality work for a quality, until recent years, company, .

There are plenty of people that need help and want their equipment immediately from retail. There are plenty of people that still have faith in the Frontline, and want the best results by having a professional deal with their account.

Network guy thanks for the heads up. The entire ship must be slowly sinking, or they don't give a rats cuz 5g is coming to replace 4g.

Hans will fix it. Sales will go to resellers and the internet. He will buildout the network and develop new services. That is what the customers want the best network and services not shady sales people at the mall. The aging demographic that liked stores and the handholding are going to pasture. The modern consumer doesn't want to go to the mall and take a number and wait for the privilege to buy something from a grifter when they can purchase the same item at home and have it delivered over the next day or two.

hey network employee refer to Bloomberg article dated 7/1/2014 transition to Ericsson network maintenance just like Sprint, which VZ denied. Dust your resume off. Political hack hire, no skills. WalMart is hiring door greeter, best wishes!

OP, I am on the network side of the house, and we are being forced fed new job responsibilities handed down from a higher pay grade. Did we get any raise? Negative! We are now doing less maintenance on our sites, including only doing preventative maintenance once a year(used to be quarterly). That is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a ZERO overtime policy as well as more triggering sectors because of lack of spectrum/bandwidth on the sites. I take pride in my position and job. when my fingerprints are on the network equipment, that equipment is mine. Now upper management is allowing people who really have no training at all troubleshooting issues take the reins of oncall responsibilities all in the name of COST SAVINGS!. We have been challenged to think outside the box. VZ management has left the box and has forgotten where they hang their hat. The Best Network. That is a long way of saying that you are not alone and lots of us feel the exact way you do, and that is on an island.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this whopper of a bad business decision - The "External Event" surplusing and laying off of many thousands of employees in 2002. (or was it 2003?) I'd personally like to paddle the upper management genius that put us through that. In the end all laid off employees and all illegally transferred employees were brought back and put back at their old work locations. That fiasco had to cost the company an arm and a leg. It also left a ton of employees with a bad chip on their shoulders, carried to this day.

I bet 5% or more of the lines or subs VZW has are not in use and were slammed on people's accounts. Fluffy numbers baby. We are dirtier than almost any other sales by necessity. Thanks big red.

My decision to buy AOL and Yahoo were the best moves in Verizon's history. We bought 4 billion users (3.9 billion of them are dead or can't use a smartphone) and the liabilities of the world's largest hacking incident.

Verizon is a joke. My husband and I were loyal customers for many, many years. We went into our local Verizon to find out if they had a family plan that would cost us less each month - ya know, since we are a family. The customer service was the worst. We explained what we were looking for and the sales person and manager stood there like two lox not offering us any solutions, at all. The only thing we could deduce was that they didn't want to have us change to a lower price plan because it would reflect badly on their daily sales. So we went over to T-Mobile, and ya know what happened to our customer loyalty to Verizon...bye-bye, Felicia. We even get better reception - less dropped calls - with T-Mobile.

OP wasn't rosy... They left the door open for innovation, progress and growth; however, it was based on different principals than what VZ currently exhibits.

I think the OP paints a too rosy picture of what could have happened. The truth is that wireless service became commoditized, the rival carriers networks became good enough. So even if VZW had spent a lot more, customers may not have been that willing to pay a hefty premium for a service that was not usefully better for them. Lowell gets a lot of flack for buying out Vodafone's share, basically buying at the top, which he did on the expectation that Wireless was going to continue to be really profitable. The world changes, just like the old telcos couldn't continue making huge amounts on long distance calling plans.

OP, your scenario is quite insightful. But you seem to assume that staying a successful company with a great product and an engaged workforce is the intention of the people running the company (Board, CEO, senior leadership).

I think (not sure, not old enough) there was a time when that was the driving force of a lot of US companies - stay successful, treat people right, keep the company strong and healthy, keep making money and everyone gets some of the pie. Then "shareholder value" took over and it became all about wringing the juice from the orange for the benefit of the shareholders, the Board, and the big kahunas, at the expense of the company and the workers. They don't care that that all the short term choices and selling out caused the company to become a shell of itself as long as they made money along the way.

The bad news is the company is squarely on that path as proven by a 10B cut to ensure the dividend as well as the new CEO's 1B long term incentive (look it up online, you'll find it).

The good news is that by and large, the era of shareholder value is coming to a painful, torturous bend in the road. Gutting the companies that are the engine of the economy doesn't make sense over the long haul and sooner or later that approach is giving out. Not sure what direction the business zeitgeist will take but one possible direction is reclaiming the idea that one goal of a successful company should be to remain healthy and successful by serving its customers and having healthy long term plans instead of sell-out short term ones! ! ! ! ! Wouldn't that be great?

Also, I think the company's commitment to its core business is flagging if not already exhausted. Looks to me like it's trying to change the very nature of its business and the 10B plan show just that. It has all the hallmarks of a company that, having wrung the orange, is trying to turn itself into some other fruit.

Sadly right now that looks like maybe a Lemon.

I feel bad for the all the hard working and well intentioned people who took jobs there thinking it was a good company and then found this awful, declining mess.

I hope they can rebound one way or another.

I left for the reasons you said. When it became more about slamming Hum instead of taking care of the customers I knew the writing was on the wall. They laid off all our support people and we took over all of their duties even though we are in sales and have quota to hit. Then they changed our commissions and I’m probably not even getting a last commissions check because in order to succeed you have to slam TMP and tablets. It’s no longer about the sales or the tech.. Hell they don’t even train us on the tech. It’s about slamming people over the head with failing products. They started talking about writing people up for not having enough Hum or salesforce or having ARD or TMP too low and I knew it was time to leave.
