anyone hear from or been notified by HR or managers today that they have been let go? This time waiting game is not healthy for people and their families.

At AT&T Most people are for a paycheck, with no career path, and constant layoffs, It looks like a losing proposition to me

i think it should be investigated why a top performer was let go over less performing peers.

@UKgrLNs-1ebj - Hey you are the one that lead with that comment which implies that you are more important because you have a family and financial obligations and are thus more important than those "...people with 39 years with the company and no ties. They are female and allowed to stay."

If you lead a post with that then that is supposed to be the most important thing to you.

Take the services technician job. You’ll be outside away from the others you refer to in your posts, and they give you a paycheck every two weeks. It’s good to enjoy your day and get paid also.

Interesting... So you don't know me, have no idea what my attitude is, you read an open forum post and all you have are these judgments... I can think of other dumb and selfish things... trolls on websites.

@UKgrLNs-1zep - Yes because that is a selfish thing to say, as well as kinda dumb. It also points to why you may have been let go if that kind of attitude is obvious to others.

"The company did not hire your family, your bills, your pets or anything else, they hired you."

Seriously? Yes they hired me. They hired me to perform a job that was proven I did better than any of my peers. One is of retirement age but wont retire. Out of all that I wrote the only thing you take exception with is me comparing a single retirement aged person? You have absolutely nothing to say about the ethics, the $4 BILLION in tax reform break they got, the unfair and policy violations of limiting annual ratings... of which they base surplus on...??

Uh, tell us again why you are commenting on this website? Are you a company representative hired to scour the websites and keep the bad PR to a minimum???

@UKgrLNs-1tox "There are people with 39 years with the company and no ties. They are female and allowed to stay."

Seriously? The company did not hire your family, your bills, your pets or anything else, they hired you. In fact you cost more because of your 'ties'

Don't take it so hard, they may be able to give you a service technician or wire technician job. Take the service technician job, its a union position and pays more than wire technician. Don’t worry about hooking poles, you’ll have to qualify at climbing school but most work is done from a ladder or bucket truck if your lucky. Better days!!

For my group it would have have been 4 but one of our team in another country decided to call it quits the 1st of October which left three to be surplused which means 20%. Now for my rant it looks like some of use were moved under my new manager just to cover so that he would not lose any of his original team. I just hit 19 years and am 56 another team mate is 58.

I am 52 yo, with a kid in college another a Freshman in HS. I worked in ATO GIPM and I have almost 10 years with the company full time. I was an Engineer before I came to PMO. Got the call from my AM first thing yesterday.

No one has shared numbers but I am pretty sure I am maybe one or two out of a group of ~40. Here goes my rant...

There are people with 39 years with the company and no ties. They are female and allowed to stay. I was recognized as the top performer of my group. My last AM wanted to give me an Exceeds last December but was shot down by the AVP despite a policy saying that no limitations were to be placed by the work group. I was the only program growing business while other programs were constantly loosing work. I was told that I was ranked #1 on the hit list turned over in December.... And yet I was the one to go...

Seriously, this is madness. How badly managed must a company be to get a $4 BILLON annual tax relief and continue to say they are not profitable??? I applied to over 100 positions in the last 3 years trying to get to a new technology and not once did I get even a phone interview. I was going back to school for a Computer Engineering degree, had 94% of my Future Role training completed, badges out the butt, volunteered for FirstNet Voluntary responder and one of the first to complete all my training... I am a Veteran on the Vet's ERG....And all for not...

I really enjoyed the work I did. I didn't always appreciate the people I had to contend with to get things done. Folks I am telling you this is all personal and political for AM's and above... I have commiserated with 3 other folks that were notified and their stories are just about the same...

This is madness.... I am not angry that I got surplussed. I am angry that I haven't seen contractors go, I have seen people of retirement status not retire, I haven't seen the bad eggs surplussed, I am no where s-xist but I see all these female clicks with our female AVP and not one of them are "impacted"... worthless principals are all safe???... and seriously I don't get this mentality of laying off skilled people while college grads continue to get red carpet treatment. I am especially angry that at&t constantly says stuff like do the right thing, operate with trust and transparency, people are our best resource... and yet they do everything opposite of those mantras.

Karma is a b--ch and I hope the rumors of 30% of L3 and above are true!!!

@1zdj: as ridiculous as it may seem, a badge is just another metric for which the company uses to assess your value. Whether or not that’s what it represents is irrelevant. Listen to what the company is focused on and focus all of your attention on that.

Would of never believed it before, but I am convinced the only reason I got spared was because of the badges I have. Our VP even said on the call that if there was a tie they would use badges as a tie breaker. Place gets more bizzare by the day. They definately targeted the older workers. Dinosaur saved by the badge.

@1peg: all of the people on my team chosen hadn’t spent time completing training in PLE. Whether or not PLE would’ve saved them is debatable. What I saw on a daily basis were these individuals still doing the same job that they were doing 5 years ago when the expectation for those in our position has changed.

12% target between the voluntary offer and the surplus is a lot of people. This was not about people upgrading their skills. This was about the company saving money to help the Q3 and Q4 numbers. They need it after becoming the most indebted company in the world.

That training is a joke, about as much worth as those T-Space “flair badges”. The only ones that mean anything are third-party certificates and degrees. As for updating skills, consider how many people are surplused versus the number of job postings, it’s musical chairs on the Titanic, not that there is much feasibility of getting one of them vs a recent grad with “fresh skills” and low salary. Stop being such a ‘tard (with an F) coming here and rubbing salt on people’s wounds. I hope karma will visit you after a few years and salary increases, then you can chant those platitudes to yourself while you scramble. SMFH

@1rfe: I work with older people and they’re able to do what our business was doing a decade ago but our roles have changed, training and help provided to “reskill” but they didn’t take advantage and are completely clueless about the expectations for them today which is why they were selected.

@1clm: Apparently you assume AT&T pension. That is not a useful factor for folks from acquisitions like Cingular. And apparently you don't have anybody in your organization who is older and still a significant contributor to the team. But I appreciate your guidance.

yup - notified today. 65 years old; I guess this will be my last career. Was in ATO. No idea who else got it, but the vp said her target was 12%, counting the July volunteers and today's surpluses.

I was surplussed today. I'm in the SF bay area and have just under 30 years. It is a relief to me since it is very stressful and I guess I'm just at the point that I would like to get rid of the stress. I was going to leave next year anyway. But I hope those that aren't in a position to retire the best of luck. They did say a few years ago that by 2020 they expect to really downsize so I guess they really do mean it. Best of luck to all.

they have contractors, younger cdt "matrix employees", and vendors that work alongside groups doing work that are not counted in the ADAE listing. That is one way AT&T gets away with everything - let these people shadow the employees in the group, take work away from them, and then cut the older ones.

How many employees on the engineering side of the house are under 40 to begin with? I can’t think of very many. Hard to claim age discrimination of 40+ employees when the majority of those people in those positions are older. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this though, it s---s all the way around.

I received a surplus notice today. 23+ years and over 40 years old- I'm in RAN engineering (my understanding was that the wireless side wouldn't be hit)... I counted the number of surplused employees in my affected group and of that number, over 90% are over 40- are we seeing a pattern here???

Given what I mentioned above- has anyone talked to an employment attorney? The problem is AT&T has you over a barrel you need to sign a waiver to receive 6 months of pay and health insurance that's subsided...but, if the actions of the company are illegal I'm not sure why signing your right to sue for age descrimination would be enforceable?

Google Horowitz vs. AT&T.... Age descrimination complaint by several managers laying out the scheme of the 2020 plan and how older workers are targeted and are never able to find an open position!

The "all clear" call was just held by Robert Walters, VP RAN Operations, ATO at 3 PM CST. If you were on it, you are clear for this round. Affected folks were notified sometime before this call, probably individually by their managers. No information in terms of number of folks affected was given. Nobody asked any questions, call took about 5 minutes.

Anyone laid off make sure you pull your money from the 401k as soon as you are finished. See how the company responds when att backed 401k’s destroy their stock
