ATO Layoffs

To those in ATO who believe they’ll be selected by the end of next week, what’s next for you? Will you look for other positions within the company? Will you retire?

@3pam...You have no right to judge anyone. You do not know what all is going on in someone elses life, or why they may not be able to retire yet without that little boost from a buyout, so keep your judgemental thoughts to yourself.

I have heard some chatter, nothing official. I too with 47 years would love to see a non-management / craft offer. It would be one way to reduce head count, and hopefully save some of the younger ones their jobs. Or a job to transfer into.

I'm hoping there will be a non-managment offer forthcoming in ATO. With nearly 37 years, I am ready to go! Has anybody heard any chitter chatter about it??

Central office electronic technicians and outside digital technicians are loaded the trouble tickets pertaining to switches, routers, and optical line terminals located in ATT property, cell sites or customer locations. These are union positions.

@2imm well said. We all need each other, field services, core, HR, everybody. Does the hand complain that the feet does not do anything? How about the eyes? Together they work well, separate they are useless. My .02.

@UBwOXcH-1wha That is a very sad statement for you to make. It exhibits that many employees have no f’ing clue about what goes on in the company they work for. Unfortunately, responses like yours is typically within the union workforce.

The union leadership should do more to educate the union workers on how the company is structured.

ATO is responsible for ALL network planning, design, execution, performance and operations. In layman terms, that’s all Core routers, all cell sites, all switches and all mobile Core. Everything. They are the reason why the network is operational and not collapsed.

Well, don't be dumb and leave early. Look for a position, just apply, knowing you won't get it... Look OUTSIDE the company beginning now! If you get a job outside the company, don't tell anybody... try to figure a way to double dip for a month or two... I know 2 people who did it. Hooray for them!

Why in the world would anybody look for another position within the company. Do you actually think it will be better? It's the same damn rotten company.

It is automation that is going to drive layoffs more than anything.

https://www.fiercetelecom.com/telecom/network-automation-market-will-top-7-billion-by-2024-report

"SD-WAN has the potential to reduce deployment costs by approximately 40%, according to the report. ...

The adoption of automation in the banking industry will lead to banks automating their IT operations, increasing productivity and efficiency by around 60%. ...

The report summary didn't mention the toll that automation can take on reducing jobs across the telecom industry. Deutsche Telecom has pledged to use automation to cut its costs, but it's also looking at cutting 10,000 jobs at its T-Systems unit..."

The buzzword is "autonomous network" as in no humans needed.

ATO has the mobility network operations and POTS network, all software development, etc. Any Technology Operations is what it stands for.

@ -1ogy - I am still getting those standard replies about a year after surplus. i sense they were never serious about getting those job postings filled in the first place. most of the time the postings are somewhat generic. there seems to be another list of openings that are not advertised that go around upper management that they may try to get some of the people they do not want gone (younger) into those positions.

Standard reply when applying for another position within the company, “We compared your skills against the needs of the position and for this one, we aren’t a match, but we would like to encourage you to consider applying to another open position.”

Technology operations, yeah. No impact to bottom line - easily outsourced to CR or India

It's the enterprise network, your laptops, servers, product implementation, supply chain, security, other meaningless stuff not really relevant- easy cuts

If ATT can layoff that many ATO workers, that position must be irrelevent to the bottom line. What kind of work does ATO perform and are any ATO employees represented by the union?

Does anyone know what the difference in severance is if you choose the early exit vs. the 60 day job search and you don't get an offer? Is it full vs. half?

If you are selected for surplus, read the paperwork - if you choose the 60 days, failure to make a good-faith attempt to find another position (e.g. not applying to any jobs) can jeopardize the severance package.

"Choosing to find job within the company I believe forfeits your unemployment benefit as they are going to make you sign a form that if you failed to find a job within that time period, you are volunteering to quit. I may be wrong, but that's what I've heard." - You are wrong, trying to find another position in the company demonstrates that you did not want to leave the company, so you were involuntarily released.

I'll file a lawsuit. Attornies are ready already. Layoffs will be based on performance/leadership appraisals, skills, and experience.

My 2017 performance/leadership appraisal was degraded by my manager while my harassment complaint against him was being investigated by HR.

@UBwOXcH-1kqb he/she probably means that they were on an unaffected call. And telling your boss you're going to quit in order to save someone elses job isn't how it works, especially if no one in your workgroup is affected either. The bean counters at the top want at least X% gone. X + a few disgruntled workers leaving on their own volition is even better to them.

@UBwOXcH-1yiv ....you were told how? Are you in an affected group? Why did you not tell your leadership to put you at the top of the list to save someone else’s job? Sorry but your post doesn’t past the smell test and seems to be another fake employee post on this board.

60 days is for you to transfer all your work to someone else, then say goodbye - nothing more.

Even though I have been told I would not be included in this latest round of layoffs, I have accepted another position and will be giving my notice this Monday. AT&T is so unstable these days and I heard mention there will be another round of layoffs early next year again. No more respect for the employees. They have been losing a lot of skilled people and are putting people with no experience in charge. Shades of Equifax...I believe this will get the company in trouble in the next year.

The requisitions mean nothing. If they don't get who they want, they simply cancel the job posting. And in some cases appoint someone in an "acting" position. Then miraculously, one day the "acting" designation disappears without reposting the position. COBC, ethics, and morals, whatever! Doesn't exist.

Will accept my faith and move on. Looking for a job within the company is a waste of time. Ive seen it first hand that those requisitions are just for people they've already picked out anyway and the requisition made is only for formalization to get through HR. Choosing to find job within the company I believe forfeits your unemployment benefit as they are going to make you sign a form that if you failed to find a job within that time period, you are volunteering to quit. I may be wrong, but that's what I've heard.
