Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why Retail is toxic

Many different parts of the company with different leaders, so everyone has a different experience.

If you’re in retail and feel it’s a toxic culture to come work in, that’s because it is. IMO, your problem isn’t with AT&T or Randall but with Shay.

Once Roth left and the “Shay Regime” was put in place, that’s when the culture went down hill and became toxic and abusive. There’s talk of coach and develop, but it’s all rank and spank. Retail is a sales role and you are expected to hit your sales target. How you do that, no one really cares as long as your not bringing too much attention to yourself and the manner in which you do it (flip accounts, false churn, etc). If your not hitting your number, then you’re a terrible excuse for a person, and should be made to feel that way everyday, otherwise you won’t come back tomorrow “motivated” to do what’s nessacary to hit targets.

If you’re in the central region, you may not feel it as much as Fred is a great buffer to that non sense. Appreciate that and him, if you haven’t realized that yet. The west region likely misses that now.

But that won’t stop Shay from doing his market visits. I don’t know if it’s a conscious move on his part or if he’s aware that he does it at all, but he typically will find a level 1 or 2 manager that he will rip apart and be little in front of their peers and leadership team for little reason at all. Maybe it was the way a question was phrased or he just decides he doesn’t like you that day on that visit. Without ever addressing his inappropriate and unprofessional behavior, he leaves the market letting VPGM’s, AVP’s, DOS’s, ARSMs with the impression that this is how you lead and this is how you become successful at AT&T. A flywheel effect starts up and it only intensifies from there.

You may think it’s your ARSM, DOS, or VPGM and that’s where the problem is, but it’s beyond any of their territories and stretches across the markets and regions. They are likely just as miserable as you, or they are one of these new 20 something ARSM’s that don’t know any better and think this is normal for Corp America. It’s not!

This is why ENPS s---s and one part of declining numbers in retail stores. They keep trying new stuff like IHX and now pop ups, but it’s still all under Shay, and that toxic culture will infect and kill the potiental success of any of these programs.

Shay’s culture will eat and destroy the best laid plans and strategies for breakfast lunch and dinner.

The only light at the end of the tunnel is the regime seems to be winding down. His retirement can’t come soon enough for AT&T. Until then, the beatings will continue until moral improves.

Have you ever experienced a Shay market visit? Am I off base or have you seen/experienced the same thing?

Shay is by far the absolute worst speaker. no excitement or encouraging words.....EVER.

I wish I could record him reading books on tape and I would sell them to insomniacs... guarantee to put you to sleep in minutes.

The most legit higher up is by far Kelly King, period.

Shay is awful. The worst leader in AT&T, and it’s not even close.

My DOS is always saying “if they’re not calling HR/union on you, then you’re doing something wrong”. HR may not be the friend you think they are. At least not in OHPA.

888-871-2622- Look it Up. It is one of your first classes EVERYONE is required to take. Trust me, they do investigate everything that is called in. There is this nasty little thing called A LAW SUIT that they want to avoid above any and everything.

If your managers continue to tolerate that type of treatment, then that should tell you they are a bunch of ball less twits. That is exactly what allows "leadership" to continue to browbeat them into submission. They need to grow some cahones and stand up this treatment and speak out. At a minimum they have the option to engage HR, as do you as a craft employee. In my experience, HR is a better friend to you than the union.

I was in the STX market when Shay visited a new store of the future in the Woodlands. Proceeds to rip into a store manager for a walk he didn’t like, then rips into the RP, VPGM, DOS and ARSM for the external sign -how could they all be so stupid by not making facilities put up the new version (which was not released at the time the store was built)....and that is just one of many. He talks the talk, but does not walk the walk.

This kind of behavior is company wide. It's a disgrace.

From a technicians perspective I completely agree. I really like the work, but the culture is toxic. I try not to let the negativity bring me down, but we are getting burned out.

This may be the most accurate thing I’ve seen on this website. Shay is notorious for his visits.

So well said. As an AR, COR execs try to push their culture of misery on to us. Most of the time I've been doing this job a lot longer than they have. They lie and insult your intelligence. I actually feel better about myself after speaking to the ARSM or DOS or even higher ups. Why? Because I know I am a better person than they are. They bring COR store reps around as examples to be like. Usually the scum of the earth. Similar to what Obi Wan warned Luke about in Mos Eisley. These successful bottom feeders scam everyone. But they generate numbers. Then the get moved up to management position based on their sales, not managerial skills. They hire people like themselves and hand down their scuminess. As customers catch on to their ways they get "promoted" to another store and let the cancer grow there. How do these people look their parents in the face and know they raised an immoral, soulless useless being? It's just a matter of time before T is the new Wells Fargo.
