Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Verizon/Unions early bargaining

ATTENTION VERIZON MEMBERS-

As you know, our current collective bargaining agreement with Verizon does not expire until August, 2019, a little less than 15 months from now.

However, Verizon, CWA and IBEW are jointly announcing today that we will be entering into two weeks of bargaining beginning June 18, 2018 to determine whether it is possible to agree on the terms of a contract extension.

This development reflects an improved relationship with the company since the conclusion of our strike just about two years ago. We will keep you posted on further developments.

@Camaro girl. Yeah you are so good at negotiating your own contracts that you need to scab on someone else's to afford a new car. It does not seem you are to successful at all. The money you celebrate making as a special windfall is what is normally made here. You can only hope to make as much and you are full of S**t if you say otherwise. Why else would you be salivating for what we already have. Unfortunately it looks like you may need to wait another 4 1/2 years at best to earn again. The Camaro might be getting a little long in the tooth by then. You should consider going back to school to brush up on your negotiating skills. You may need them for your next car purchase, this time from the used lot. Some of those sales guys are pretty slick so you best be on your game.

My cell phone doesn’t have a black ugly cable going to it, so why should the cell tower need it? It’s magical!

Fiber ducts are for fiber. They also have self support fiber and fiber that gets lashed to the strand.

I love unions. You guys got me double pay for 2016... looking forward to your next strike! Unions are for asshats that are too stupid or lazy to negotiate their own best contract... long live the union.

Also, why are "ducts" strung pole to pole?

Are you trolling unchartered waters?

@3ids, I don't follow your, "Also still need copper for cell towers. Sheeez!" comment. Please expound.

5G is magical....no need for big ugly black fiber ducts strung from pole to pole....you have no clue as to how 5G works. Also still need copper for cell towers. Sheeez!

Wireless gets unionized.

Unions fall under same medical plan as management.

5G rolls out throughout the extension years and the wide-spread implementation allows for the beginning of the retirement of the big ugly black cables strung from the poles.

Wholesale job elimination on wireline.

I have 30 yrs and i am in my early 50's unless we get a enhanced esip i will stay another 10 years here collecting a pay check,if they want us older folk to retire ,they have to give us something extra to leave cause the monthly pension here s---s and the lump sum is more like a dump sum causes of the rise in interest rates...

A lot of people are pension eligible, but still fairly young (early to mid 50’s)....they have nothing to lose by working another 5 years or so if no eisp comes around. It’ll get them closer to age 59 1/2 so that they can get their 401k without any penalties, and they will be much closer to social security. If the company wants guys with 30 years to retire, but they are only 50-55 years old, they are going to have to entice them with an eisp....otherwise they will stay on for a few more years.

@2zpz

Or the company could just be postering and going through the motions so that over the next 15 months they can get everything you mentioned in your post without having to pay any member to leave.

There are many older members that will retire, EISP or not, before the expiration of the contract.

They do not wish to go through another strike and also realize what they may lose if they have to go into another contract.

There will always be the “they have to pay me to leave” guys, but the smart ones, with the means to retire, will do so EISP or not before this contract expires. Especially if things aren’t looking promising.

@2kkq .... exactly. No doubt the company wants the old, protected member gone; likely want them gone before the contract comes due. The company would certainly prefer a workforce that is not protected and a workforce that has a large number of contractors or out sourced workers.

An EISP not be offered has nothing to do with the amount of work to to be done. They can retire a boat load of people and bring in contractors or bring back some workers as contingent workers. There are thousands of ex telecom employees that would come in and work a few days a week just to keep ties and have extra spending cash. Some would even go to contractor firms and come back as contractors.

Overall a good move if the company gave a very handsome ISP to its senior members. Get them out now or wait 'X' number of years for them to retire. Either way the company will be paying...might as well have them off the books as soon as possible.

They just hired a lot of people last year, why wouldn’t they offer an eisp after the new hires are properly trained?

For all you wanting a EISP, it is not going to happen. To much work out there to have any surplus.

My guess would the Union is going to get some concessions for permitting a very, very nice ISP/EISP to be offered to the senior craft.

Restrictions avoid obstructions and excite ambition for requisition; if free admission, instructions for progression would create nothing but confusion and obvious retardation.

Looks like the company wants to settle early to avoid a strike so that they can focus on getting rid of the wireless stores. They don’t have a union so the company can do whatever they want. Maybe they will use the money that they used to pay wireless employees to go toward a raise for the union employees...hope its more than 3%. Maybe even have enough left over to offer an eisp.

Sounds like gvv doesn't even know much of what he's talking about.

He sure is dropping all these high tech terms though like HTUC!

Wow.

Color me impressed.

He is probably that same scab who was bragging a few weeks back about all the discos he did in the central office last strike.

The company hero. 👍

No! Bring on the strike I want that FAT PAYCHECK! With all of the rain that southeastern Virginia is getting I’m sure that there are tons of HTUCs with red lights right now that will require my “touch” especially since our “craft“ employees sold splicing issues with orange plastic bags. Bring on the money baby!

@TfWoFvF-tle

This troll is right.....The Union "realizes" if they keep winning strikes the way the completely destroyed the company in the last one....They'll bankrupt the company and everyone loses. You have to "realize" who you are negotiating with

Past winners.

Vodafone 150 Billion

MCI 8.4 Billion

Aol 4.4 Billion

Yahoo 4.5 Billion

Terremark 1.4 Billion

XO Communications 1.8 Billion

Fleetmatics 2.4 Billion

Oh no now I will have a layoff proof job until 2022. I guess I should fear my 2022 demise. I was horribly fearful of 2019. 2016 was scary as well, come to think of it they said the gig was up in 1995. I seem to remember we where to be done in 1998 and 2000 as well as 2003. 2008 was to be a bloodbath. I am uncertain but I think 2011 was to be it, or was it 2014 I forgot. All this waitng for my job skills to be nonrelevant and becoming unemploymed is taking a lifetime. Looks like I will be unemploymed in the end after all, however it will be in the guise of retirement.

"This development reflects an improved relationship with the company since the conclusion of our strike just about two years ago."

If the relationship is improved it is because the Union realizes they no longer have the upper hand in a strike. The last strike proved that and the Union fully understands just how far senior management is willing to go.
