Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Be careful what you wish for with severance

I see so many people here wishing to be laid off because of severance, as if that will solve all of their problems.

Folks, be really careful what you wish for. Severance might sound great on paper, but by the time it's in your pocket there is much less of it (much higher tax bracket) and you have so many more expanses you need to cover in full (medical, dental...) that you'll be wondering where did it all go much sooner than you expect.

I'm not saying it's not a nice safety net, but it's not as good as some people imagine. Just be prepared for it all in case you are laid off.

I was a director. Got nearly $500k in servance spread out over 4 years. Wife works so we switched to her benefits.

It’s even better for VP and above. Marni left with tens of millions in tax deferred structures.

Of course that largess comes out of your salaries, bonuses and benefits.

Nice work if you can get it. Helps to be a woman.

Some people have an actual VISION to become & create the next Verizon or the next billionaire corporation in this day & age.

Some people just need the TIME & a few extra bucks with a nice kick in the a-- (layoff) to get started. This & that Severance could be JUST the thing that catapults another person to a new & better of life.

Not everyone lives in fear & the paycheck to paycheck but doesn’t scare them a bit.

If a severance helps those who are wishing for this to do better for them and their families, LET THEM BE & SAVE this post space for something other than advising people to think freely.
