Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Unions and the Democrat Party are crying over lost $$$

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Wednesday in Janus v. AFSCME that nonunion workers cannot be forced to pay fees to public sector unions.

The case concerns whether public employees can be forced to pay so-called agency fees to fund the work of public sector unions.

Experts said that a ruling in favor of Janus would be the most significant court decision affecting collective bargaining rights in decades.

As a new coach, I found the union rules very helpful. Arbitrary choices could all be made on seniority. Less favoritism. Treat the team fair and the workers come to you first when you don't know all the rules. Fix the issue, no grievance. I was thankful for the union. Seniority is the only benefit for workers in the same position. Respect what they earned by years of being number 2.

The bad news

He found three big things:

Recently unionized firms employ fewer people

Recently unionized firms pay lower average wages

Recently unionized firms are more likely to go out of business

The idea that a successful unionization drive would reduce wages and salaries seems paradoxical. Delve deeper into the numbers and the solution emerges. It's not that unionization leads to wage cuts. It's that unionization leads to a change in the composition of the workforce. Older and better-paid staff are disproportionately likely to leave a newly unionized shop, which brings average pay levels down even without anyone actually having their wages cut.

Google is not representative of most employers, in fact it is the exception. I wonder how many of the anti-union trolls here could get hired by Google or Microsoft? It is easy throw out red herrings to support half truths if all you got are slogans you picked up on Fox.

Unions help to provide family-wages, how many of the "thousands of non-union companies" actually provide enough compensation to support a middle-class family?

How many people are just the working poor, one paycheck away from living in their car? Lots.

If that is your description of a financially successful family in the United States of America in 2018, then you got me, because we have different views on what working people deserve who live in the richest country in the world.

Keep buying the union lies, and paying them your hard earned money to give you lip service and nothing else. There are thousands of non union companies with WAY better pay and benefits than AT&T. It's a scam.

Right, Google average salary for entry level associate is 96K, Unlimited vacation, 401K/Pension, and a career oriented company. Union people are lost in the T bubble

Yeah, the folks at Google work for $5 an hour, have no insurance or 401K, work 12 hours a day with no OT, and can't take a lunch break. Let's update the Union talking points from 100 years ago.

@TSgAv4l-1vcd

Read a history book.

I bet most of the people who work at Bank of America and Wells Fargo would love to have a union.

Union membership is low because of how successful corporations have been at buying congress, not because union members hate having insurance, job security or a decent wage.

Most of you don't have a clue on what this desision was. It just prevents unions from demanding money from people who work in public service to pay for their political actions in non- right to work states.

"Without unions there would be no over-time pay, no medical benefits or paid vacations." LOL What about companies like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, Corning Glass, and the major insurance companies. They all have great benefits, paid vacations and good working conditions. I am sorry snowflake, but the Supreme Court put another nail in the coffin for the unions. Only 9% of US workers are in private sector unions now. That is a fact, not an emotion.

“Just wait till they fire you with no reason! They you will be crying for a union.... just management trolls posting you don’t need a union. Just look at the nonunion cable workers they make half of what we make”

No reason to be aggressive and the cable thing is NOT true people in and out of unions make about the same; however, I do agree that unions are needed.

Cases and point, management employees (with more than 6 years of tenure) you ever wonder why AT&T was one of 15% of Fortune 500 companies that offer a pension on top of the 401k?

That’s right Union. While some of the CWA members can be unethical and overly aggressive at times, most are not and let’s be honest, there are just as many bad managers/leaders as there are bad union reps.

This decision hurts everyone, the unions have gotten weaker over the last few years, which is why T has been able to be rid of the pension for anyone hired after 2012.

Next tine you hope that the Union is gone, remember that T is not a person but just a corporation that would layoff as many people as possible to turn a profit.

To whom ever wrote this post F$#k off. You will also be crying when you find out that without collective bargaining you are just another expendable worker. Go ask corporate for a raise, or ask for more days off etc, and see how far you get. I bet you aren’t even a ATT employee but instead a right wing nut job. I’m not a huge fan of the decision’s made by IBEW over the years but, unions are only as strong as its members.

It is not the money, it is the damage to the quality of life for union members. Right-to-work is an attack on working people and their families, and just another scheme to make the 1% even richer.
