Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

COST CUTTING

Have some compassion for the people that don't get let go. Who gets stuck with the remedial spreadsheet tasks when all the low hanging fruit is let go.. THEY DO! Along with the work they currently do, they now have to update some meaningless daily spreadsheet that nobody reads anyway. That's the thanks they get for staying. And if your co-worker happened to do more than update spreadsheets, guess what, you get that work too.

The next round will be even worse. Or by attrition. With all low hanging fruit gone. All that's left is people that do real work but ticked off a director at some point. Now you basically get double work with no more pay and no raises ever becuz "COST CUTTING" But youll stay 4 your 8 weeks of vacation instead of leaving for a reasonable company with reasonable demands

Not my OP (original post), but I read the OP as low hanging because of company goals. Cheap labor and no pension expense is how I see the company goal. About spreadsheets since there is never time to provide documentation, I get calls from employees (old and new) that have messed up my sheets. Sometimes sheets are used. I send out sheets, but never know who reads or who wants to be on distro with their boss or a VP that does not use my work anymore. I have never received a request to take someone off distro. I did not read as less qualified.

New employees don't have 4 weeks vacation and were looking for work when hired. If a better offer comes, they are gone.

I'm sick of seeing posts implying that those who have been laid off or got buyout offers are "low-hanging" fruit who were cut loose because they weren't valuable. Last year, I saw a number of people who were experts in networking, cybersecurity, cloud computing and mobility technology lose their jobs. They worked their rears off, developed projects and technologies that AT&T is touting as next-gen products. But they were let go because they didn't play office politics and kiss up to the right VP. Or they had been with the company for 20+ years and cost too much. I and two colleagues were let go with no notice in January, and we were all told, flat out, by our 30-something manager that it was because she wanted younger people in our roles. But ... we all found new positions within a month, while AT&T has only filled two of our three positions, and one of those two new hires quit after a few weeks because the hours were too long. So, yeah, keep telling yourself that the people who were laid off spent hours playing on the internet and filling out meaningless spreadsheets. Go right ahead ...
