Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Got my package

2 weeks for every year, so in my case thats 72 weeks. Plus get the full-ride medical insurance. Also in my case an age + service kicker, which in my case is $500/yr for a nice kitty of $47,000. One more thing: negotiated additional $5,000 to go for relo expenses back to NE. We'll probably just do a vacation with that to celebrate. And already have 5 offers to consult back! Nice.

This offer is a joke. No benefit to anyone except the top performers who know they'll find another job within a month and will take it as a bonus to join another company. Shouldn't we be laying off the bottomfeeders instead of enticing our best to leave???

There is no incentive there for this Voluntary separation being offered, especially for those of us that already had pension structure that allowed a lump sum payout. And for someone like me that is still too young to be able to access any of those funds anyway, it's a moot point. I am somewhat disappointed, in that Arnoldi's email made it sound like there was an attractive incentive offer forthcoming. The offer is a joke. I don't understand why anyone would take this offer instead of just waiting to be laid off. Then at least you can stick around on payroll a while longer while looking for another job.

Anyone familiar with the offer I pasted below from a previous post? I assume this came from a bargained employee -- I would take this offer and leave tomorrow.

Standard offer to voluntarily go. Full severance package as it is 6 mo max if you have 20 yrs. service, if you are eligible you can retire, or take transition plan get half severance and accelerated retirement if within 3 yrs of modified 75 rule. You can leave in 30 days instead of the 60 those surplussed get.

Don't forget the government gets their cut especially if the company lump sums the payments. Ouch!

So, if this is the exact same package you get when surplused, what the big incentive to take this? Six months severance in both cases? I'm confused.

The offer was insulting. My president claimed in the message this morning that it will be a good package. I heard rumors that up to 18 months of severance. This one was not even like the one given to employees last year. I hope this is an opening offer and a better one will be offered later this year or next. I suspect they will not get close to how much they need to separate.

I retired from AT&T Labs in early 2017 after a little over 11 years of year service. My separation was not voluntary, except that I was permitted to look for another job withing the company, with the requirement that I must accept any offer at similar salary within 50 miles of my current location. My original intent was to work until 70, health permitting. I was enjoying the work, and learning new technological skills, mostly through my own efforts outside of work. Rather than risk getting a new assignment, and then being laid off with an inferior separation package down the line, I opted to leave after the two weeks notice. My employment began before pensions were migrated to 401K, so that helped. In fact, having survived two market downturns at two previous jobs, I opted out of any 401K participation while at AT&T. I missed out on the big run-up after 2008, but the absence of anxiety about the issue more than made up for it. We invested what would have been my contribution in home improvements and some modest overseas travel.

I wish all of you still struggling with employment uncertainty at T the best of luck. I miss being "in-harness" and having daily technical challenges, but had no interest in the post-merger (ATT-DTV) morass, which may even be less of a problem than the upcoming Time Warner problems sure to arise.

@TGEOwae-jfc-- This is not true at all.." If they don’t get the volunteers they will force reduction and then you get NADA.." , we are talking about management surplus here, and we've been through many over the last several years. What they are offering with this great voluntary separation offer is bubkus, zero, zilch. In a surplus exercise, the surplussed managers get the standard separation based on years of service and capping at 6 months, which is exactly what is being offered here. If you get surplussed (and no doubt more of that coming) you can elect to stay on payroll to find another job at AT&T (which won't exist) but at least you can use that time to find employment externally...and depending on what you do that external job market has improved significantly over the last year or so.

I heard at least 2 offers floating around.. one is the standard 6months sev with no other benefit and for most of the org.. the other is the enhanced 24months sev package for a small set of groups within tech dev.. neither has EPO besides the recent unrelated lumpsum change.. no chance of negotiatng relo expenses or cars!! maybe a pair of jeans worn and signed by anderson cooper!! :))

You contributions over the years are obviously worthy of the extra sweet package to dispose of you with no fuss. Congrats Mr. Baller!

Are you really willing to take the chance of finding another job. If they don’t get the volunteers they will force reduction and then you get NADA. Unless someone has your back ,..,,,

Two more things: I negotiated for a free 2019 BMW M760i and the Company is paying off my mortgage. They REALLY wanted me to leave!!!

So myself and a number of ATO colleagues have received the detail on Voluntary Separation via email within the last hour. I have concluded that the poster is indeed full of it, which I suspected when he/ she stated they negotiated an extra 5K. Severance caps at 6 months. In fact, there is no (read: nada, zero) real incentive to take this offer, you'd be better off getting caught up in a future surplus action (which you can be sure will follow). There is no enhanced pension offer, there is no severance offered beyond the standard package. At least if you're surplussed you can stay on for a a couple months after you're notified and use that to try and find another job.
