Old thread. But the outsourcing plan went WAY off the rails. Who knew that parts of IT were critical or required to be onshore???

Is it true that some big decision is going to be made today? Any announcements coming?

NDA'd IT Management here... Digital Workplace and IT Cloud Services contracts scheduled to be signed 8/1, with the remainder of IT development work a few months later. IT Executives were in India 2 weeks ago meeting with HCL and IBM, it will be ugly.

Does anyone have the latest on this thread? We are hearing a lot of things - production support, VCM going to IBM, CfO IT to Deloitte so on.

Rumor is the U.S. spelling of the noun meaning a piece of unverified information of uncertain origin.

If someone has any proof to say IBM deal is set, then only post it, just spreading rumours will not help and people get tired of listing such false news.

I work in BR, and for several months (don't recall exactly), there was a 15-20 minute backup just to get off campus at 5/530. As of 2 or 3 weeks ago, the backup was gone. Yes, there are RIFs happening. IT is also being affected, but it's very hard to tell unless you're in that group because the general employees aren't notified and the only way to know is if you worked directly with that person and their email information goes blank a month after the rumored date or they're switched to contingent workers. My group was supposed to have a RIF too, but so many people quit out of fear of a RIF that now we're under our headcount numbers.

I've beaten 2 RIFs in the 4 years I've been here that I know of, and it's miserable, but despite what the news says, the NJ 100K+ job market is very limited, especially for millennials, unless you're in the cloud/application space (or other specialized field) or have ridiculous credentials that you may never use. I like the jobs that say 10+ years experience with BS or PhD with 0+ years... really?

we would be talking about outsourcing regardless. It doesn't matter if your the greatest IT technician in the world, this is about $ my friend. Whether someone does or doesn't do a job well is irrelevant.

Shankar just stated in the global IT webcast that IT labor is going to move from a "fixed model to a variable model". I don't think this is a rumor. The timing is unclear, but it is definitely coming to some degree. He even mentioned as part of this, outsourcing to 3rd parties along with automating functions. All of this in the name of cost reduction. Welcome to IT Transformation! Haven't we seen this in Finance for the last 3-4 years? Folks are crazy to believe that IT won't be next.

Spot on but severance packages will be offered to managers and above only. All others either consult or are shown the door with nothing.

Yes. Your tenure ends the day you sign the offer letter with the vendor. Either way there is no severance. No company in the world will want to give you a fat severence for a 12 month contract.

Once you accept an offer from a vendor like Big Blue, you would be on the vendors severance and insurance plans. no longer on Verizon.

Personally, I think that outsourcing Verizon employees to contractors is the perfect way to get out of paying severance, unless it is in their contracts. Who knows.....

I've heard this a few too many times. "Intelligent" businesses know that they have treat their employees fairly. Because "intelligent" businesses know that when they treat their employees like crap, the employees couldn't care less about the company.

"Intelligent" businesses also realize that if they keep giving their customers increasingly worse service that they'll lose customers and credibility, which leads to losing even more customers.

"Intelligent" businesses take care of business. They realize that making "more profits" doesn't mean burning down bridges between themselves, customers and employees.

What Verizon is doing is P@ss poor business. It's short-term, dumb-a-- thinking that's infected most American corporations. Layoffs are the quick fix that kills the company.

Come on people!!! Verizon has not kept this a secret. $10 billion dollars in cuts over the next 4 years!!!! Of course they are going to outsource!! Not just iT jobs. As many jobs as they can. You know this is true. Stop whining and prepare now. This company is a business and it needs to increase profits. Just prepare and get your own finances in order. Call centers are no longer needed and are too expensive. Hba saves money... however... those jobs will eventually be eliminated to outsource, Ai, and driving people to do everything online. Verizon needs to shed employees. It is just business. And they are not keeping it a secret... get a plan B because your plan A has a looming expiration date.

This is one of the new outsource models. Have your people contracted out to a company A, let them work alongside company A offshore team and then slowly start eliminating the stateside people. It's outsourcing 101.

They did this pilot project in AT&T about 14 months back. A bunch of folks in IT were forced to accept offer with Tech Mahindra Americas with guaranteed job for 12 months and similar benefits (401k, 50% phone service etc.).

TechM promptly kicked those off the roles after 12 months with no severance and the job functions moving to India.

These numbers are wrong for "All of IT." Way more than 6,000 IT personnel. There are certain pieces that make sense in server management and offshore IT assets, but all of IT being outsourced doesn't sound right. If your numbers were north of 20K then I would say you are hearing or are repeating the truth. No need to get people upset without all of the facts.

5/4? In the past all announcements have been on thursdays....

It will all come back within 2 years when the outsourced firms cannot keep up the schedules or their pricing starts going up after the 1st year. Been there, done that - ground hog day!!

At the end of the 1 year contract, since you don't work for Verizon anymore, will these folks still get the Verizon severance package if their contracts aren't renewed? I am thinking probably not.

Who is going to manage all these consultants?
