Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

“Not a Good Fit”

My manager met with me last week and informed me that I was “not a good fit” they needed “more from me”. There were no specific incidence or misconduct. I was told to look for another position or resign. I am not in a sales role, but received a positive glowing review in March. I am not bargained but will be eligible to retire in 1 year.

Is this a common practice?

Over 25 years of service to the company and never placed on a performance plan or reprimanded.

I am sick.

in all likelihood, they will probably bad mouth you when you try to transfer so that no one will hire you. Go out to Indeed and Glassdoor and make this public.

Document everything and don't trust anyone. No one tries to help anyone when their own job is to compress and consolidate, especially HR and management. Why would they help you out and risk their own livelihoods? Especially when your salary is as high as it is? 25 years in your role with stellar evaluations and NOW your suddenly "not a fit" and someone who they "need more from?" Hope you've hired a competent employment attorney because someone's trying to screw you over.

Dude, maybe I'm missing something, but how do you all of a sudden become "not a good fit" after 25 years?

the interesting thing about the ADEA form that lists everyone's age in the "affected workgroup" is that it does not include contractors picking up work, vendors, or even younger people in the CDT matrix that are "loaned out" to other groups doing tech work. The ADEA form they use is very misleading and should be addressed to the EEOC.

Agreed, it's sleazy and unfair, but not illegal to move a position or suggest applying for another position. In this case, sounds like OP might be in a new role that isn't working out for whatever reason, although I'm not clear whether that's the case or not. It may not have been working out for awhile and now they've made a more direct statement with a suggestion that OP's talents might be well-suited elsewhere in the company in a different role, perhaps even a suggestion of a particular role. Difficult to say without knowing more particulars. Regardless of the sleaze factor, I agree that age discrimination is tough to prove, and it's hard for someone over 50 to find new employment especially when having to compete with younger prospective employees.

Relocation is one of the schemes they use to weed out older workers.

People who have lives and families do not want to dump everything and relocate for questionable job security. Boeing used this years ago to gut their older work force in IT by telling people they needed to move from the Seattle area to Texas if they wanted to keep their jobs.

This is a sleazy and very conscious maneuver to put older, higher paid people out the door.

Sounds like you're trying to make a case for age discrimination which is very difficult to prove. If they've told you you're not a "good fit" in your current job (is this a new position even though you've been there 25 years?) and suggested looking for another position in company, it sounds like they might actually be trying to work with you. I'd be inclined to take their advice even if it means relocating. Better that than no income or health benefits at your age, plus finding employment outside of company is challenging when you're over 50.

When I looked ate the ADEA form from the last layoff for my SVP org 90% were over 50. They clearly target older, higher paid employees and hope the 6 months severance will entice you to sign not to sue. See an attorney who can negotiate for you and don't resign voluntarily. It is also apparent if a manager doesn't like an employee they are targeted no matter the performance. In my case, my boss hated me because I made more than him and told me to go find a job outside

Re: statement “to think of young person retiring with nothing”, that’s your problem. Take your issue to the ceo and shareholders. No one is keeping you from participating in the company’s 401k.

Do not resign unless an attorney recommends that. If this was a verbal and nothing in writing, you will need to prove this and that may prove difficult. Hang in there and good luck.

Don’t waste your time with HR. Go directly to a recommended employment attorney immediately. The only way to end this behavior is to go the legal route. I think you may be happy with the outcome based on what I’ve read. T uses right to work state to scare folks, just go for it!

Of course they target people who are about to retire. These corporate zombies have no soul just calculators and spreadsheets.

Yes they do. Same thing happened to a coworker of mine except at T. He didn’t fight it. He got screwed over close to retirement. Because of this, I lost respect for T. Now Every time I see Randall’s face, I want to punch the guy.

Like this person is actually telling us the entire story. No one targets anyone because they are about to retire. The only time people are targeting by managers is when they are not performing. End of story

Human Resources is a cost center department tasked with mitigating financial losses to the company. This is their only goal, there is nothing altruistic about this appendage organization. Do what you want with that information.

Right about now is a good time to use those mental heath benefits. If the stress level is too much, take some time to recharge and come back with a new, winning attitude. 6 months closer to the magic number, too. .

Yes, get a lawyer and fight this. Too many people think the best response is to not make waves but in fact the opposite is true. If you don't make waves they can later say that you never had a problem with their illegal treachery.

Make a loud stink and let them know that they can not quietly push you out the door like yesterdays trash.

First of all, if you “Do not fit” and released, you don’t receive benefits - period. Don’t be an immature hater for someone that has put in the time, I am sick because I need the reduced health benefits and I have worked hard and earned them.

Btw - 53 is not old, unless you are an immature punk

You're not a good fit because you're OLD. 25 years with the company - are you kidding me! You'll be let go with a pension and lifetime health benefits, and you're "sick"? You are pathetic. Think of us young people that have to change jobs every six months in the "gig" economy and who will "retire" with nothing!

Bide your time, if you only have one year to go - you are a target, anyone over 50 are targets. Look at your options for the next surplus.

Ask for specifics. Document everything. Does your managers manager have an open door policy? They can’t make you resign or look for another position. They can terminate you for cause or lay you off but it doesn’t sound like that’s happening here.
