Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

2020 is around the corner...

I was surplussed a year ago. 2020 around the corner they said. So I prepared myself for "these" days and got a degree with emphasis in big data and ai. Mind you I was self taught in programming first then went the official university route to get the paper to prove myself to T. When surplus happened all I got was crickets when I reached out and applied. I got selected within the T system for interviews and "made it to the next step" . But as the 60 days got closer, job postings were cancelled and closed. To me it looked like they just made these steps to save face with the government but their actual intent was to just layoff. In the end I'm much better off making way more money.

When I was surplused I was told by an area manager, “ I can’t hire you for xyz position because you’re in surplus status.” When in fact he was an ARSM who was getting all his old employees jobs in stores. So I certainly understand the dog and pony show when it comes to that. I’m 32 had almost 12 years with the T between AR and COR. I’min a much better place now though, and that arsm unfortunately was surplused last go around.

2 out of 3 equals 66.66%....300,000 down to 200,000 equals 33.333%...

@S6gTZJZ-jnq clearly math is not your strong suit. To say 2 out of 3 current employees will be laid off to hit 200.000 out of the current workforce of 250, 000 is incorrect. Back to drawing board.

I got lucky and had a job lined up and actually volunteered for the surplus, used that package as a part of my house down payment.

Similar to you making a decent amount more. T is a great company to train you and pay for your tutiion, but anyone reading this site I would interview so you know your fair market value, you make as much as 70% more.

Also if you are confident that your department is getting surplused with 10+ years of tenure, I would stay for the package. No matter how good you are if you volunteer they never force you to stay.

i think at this point you should realize any work you are doing for the company is irrelevant, you may as well just put it off, take any training available that interests you for when the surplus comes, and go for greener pastures. the work will be farmed out to off shore or someone else anyway sooner or later.

Same here, surpluses left same day, got hired better company, no constant worries about layoffs, and learning skills that actually can be applied in other jobs, indeed blessed

When they announced 2020, they had 300,000 people. Now they have what, 250,000 people. They want to get it down to 200,000. That is still 2 out of 3 employees. It still sounds like a lot of people.

That is a good story to hear. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad that you went on to a better opportunity. The company continues to eject good talent further eroding their competitive edge.
