Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Working in Fear

Why are we so afraid ? It's not normal to work in fear. This is just a job .. use this platform as a stepping stone to propel yourself to bigger and better things. Do you see yourself beyond a cubical ? Do you see your self beyond working for a someone that constantly tells you .. whether or not you are or are not in the affected work group this quarter ..this is not normal. Also when you go above and beyond for the company .. they don't care. They will still lay you off regardless. Do the bare minimum! I personally want a furfilling life .. I don't want a life where I'm restricted on how, when, what to do. I want control of my own destiny.. I want to live my best life .

The management trolls just throw slogans and call names, they know that reality and the facts are not on their side. If being snarky was an actual job skill they would finally have something to contribute besides s---ing up.

I love these folks who try to tell me Unions aren’t necessary; then b--ch because they aren’t making as much, or have no employment security. Do you really think this Corporation pays these wages out of benevolence? And as far as engineers go, when I’m at someone’s house who tells me they are one, I want to run like hell. Because what I normally find there, is a cobbled up mess.

Funny a lot of people say unions aren’t needed anymore.....Sounds like management trolling again. They would love to bring in slave labor/Contractors with Zero benefits and treat you even worse! Unions aren’t perfect but with a Greedy self centered company like AT&T unions are needed

Happy Union guy, you sound like an angry, I hate all management, bargained for type. In my experience those types are also pretty lazy and cancerous to the teams they work for. But hey, I won't make any assumptions, I'm sure you're a real go-getter.

i've seen the most experienced, best managers laid off one by one but my happy union a-- is still here for now. i'm able to pay my bills, provide for my family. what's funny is i bust my a-- hard day in and out but you soft pillow paws managers think we are lazy and that a monkey could do our work. you have no respect for your subordinates and in turn your subordinates will have no respect for you. enjoy updating your resume and chasing the next job for you to go in and screw up, get laid off and still have a high opinion of yourself, while my happy humble union a-- is still here owning the problems of the operations you screwed up.

Mediocrity reigns with CWA, I worked in FL and my personal experience has been that unions are unnecessary. As an C&E engineer, I was unable to touch any tools, provide any assistance to our technicians and operators for "taking work away from a union employee." While not always the case, the union gave protection to the laborer to be extremely lazy and unproductive because as long as he showed up to work on time, there was no way he could get fired. The technicians and operators started at $28.00 an hour, which was more than many made as an engineer. Obviously they have a much lower ceiling and top out pretty quickly, but that is an enormous amount of money for someone who can get away with being lazy as he wants. Also, during lead ups to labor negotiations (there were two big ones while I was there), there was ample evidence of sabotage to the plant while engineers were being trained to operate the refinery in the event of a strike. I cannot for the life of me understand why one would put people at risk in order to protect their job.

There were several unionized technicians and operators that were very pleasant and worked hard when asked to do so, but this was not the norm. Additionally, often the best unionized workers were promoted to management and were no longer protected by the union.

I understand that there was a time in the nation when we had fourteen year old kids working 18 hours a day, but we have long since moved past those days.

I'm all for finding ways to close the income inequality gap (higher taxes, more efficient tax code), but I assure you that unionizing labor will not solve our problem. creates a bubble of incompetence that shows when they are looking for a job in he real job market.

Amen! Own your destiny! If you are in fear—take action. Step up and finish your college degree if you don’t have one yet. It may take you to your next job. A resume with experience from AT&T has value both within the company and out there in the world.

If you don’t like something, you have three choices: complain, s--- it up, or change.
