On February 2, 2018, AT&T notified IBEW Local Union 21 they were contemplating a Premise Technician Layoff. Since then there have been multiple conversations between AT&T’s Labor Relations Department and representatives from IBEW 21.

We are pleased to announce that AT&T will not be moving forward with their contemplated Premise Technician force reduction. The contemplated layoff of IBEW 21 Premise Technicians has been STOPPED!

Over the past two weeks your Union presented management with many ideas on how to avoid the potential layoff. The alternatives and implementation are still part of ongoing discussions. To put Premise Technicians at ease it is important to know employees will not be forced to work a reduced schedule.

While this communication doesn’t offer a lot details we felt it was important to put this message out to calm the fears of many Premise Technicians who thought they may be losing their jobs. Discussions are ongoing. Future information will be shared when available.

We realize the last two weeks have been stressful for our membership. We thank you for your patience. To prevent unnecessary anxiety we ask that members avoid stirring the pot by speculating and feeding the rumor mill. If you have any questions or concerns please contact your Chief Steward or Business Representative their information can be found here.

It has everything to do with the fact that young people nowadays do not believe that unions are providing services worthy of their cost. They recognize--correctly--that unions harm the hard-working and productive for the benefit of the idle and unambitious, and want no part of it. We can even recognize that unions did provide valuable results in the past--although please miss me with one more iteration of "the guys who brought you the weekend"--without buying the idea that they are due plaudits in perpetuity for pulling kids out of mills a hundred and fifty years ago. -

I wouldn’t be so confident in our union! The pre tech jobs saved in MO(dist 6) were told 2 weeks later that they would have to follow the work. Basically, move to New Mexico or Texas. What a emotional roller coaster! I feel for the appendix J employees. The union allowed the company to create this built in doomed for failure title. The obvious remedy for this would have been creating additional CST titles in the beginning, not divide and concurring tactics that where embraced by our union figure heads. IBEW and CWA are playing checkers when the game is chess. Not much hope for us blue collars.

The economy is booming right now. No one is stuck at the company. Due to the republican tax cuts, good paying jobs are plentiful. If you don’t like the union or the Company why not quit and get a job elsewhere. Complaining will not do you any good

to the core tech... i respect your position, but it does not seem the union fights very hard for prem techs at all. and as far as voting, you should know there is something shady going on with the ballots every time it's time to vote. In my area I know every prem tech in the union made sure to vote, yet when the final numbers come in, the total number of votes isn't even close to the amount of people who actually voted. this leads us to believe that shady deals are being made and core has to be in on it. somehow those contracts just keep getting pushed through. also there are plenty of core techs who spout off online about how the company is going to lay off all prem techs. if the company is telling you this, just know they are telling prem techs the same thing about you. they have each other group believing its them or you. obviously none of us want to lose our job but it seems core will agree to ANYTHING for prem techs as long as they can keep cushy gig making $45 an hour. will you guys strike to get prem techs fair pay ? Nope! but i bet if you guys wanted to strike you would expect prem techs to follow suit.

you guys are slow, arguing with each others about who have the hardest job and whos being abused the most. you are on the side. AT&T has no safety net for core techs or prem techs. Get over yourselves. Work together to stand against Corporate greed. These jobs are a source of income for your personal life no job is more important than the other. Self centered people are not welcome in this fight

LMAO. Who complains about working past 4:30. I wish we had work like that. I’m glad the union was able to do something for the Prem techs. Hopefully it’s not at a great cost. In the mean time I’d take advantage of tuition reimbursement so you’re more equipped for when the time does come.

First of all I and most of core techs that I know voted no to the contract. Also Uverse techs out number core techs and the contract passed so what does that tell you. Secondly I am not scheduled today and have to work Saturday so the time I posted is irrelevant. Third Myself and 50 other techs in Chicago were declared surplus on 12/15. I have 16 years and we are not all being moved around. Our last day on pay roll is 3/15 unless they are able to find us something else in the STR or for Everyone that have not the unfortunate experience the "surplus transfer request process". Now don't get me wrong in some parts of the company U-verse technicians work hard Unfortunately there are other areas like Chicago premise technicians get offered excused time every day and over 20 to 30% take it. Therefore your whole argument about staying after 4:30 and forced to clear the load does not hold water in all cases and these are facts you can call the union hall and inquire and they will tell you that it is true. Finally I Dont understand how a premise technician who only been around for five years or so talk about how lazy a core tech is. Our job functions and work are totally different. We recover trouble and in my area some times that means pushing a pair up to 4 to 5 blocks climbing nearly every pole to resolve issues. We access manholes dealing with pressurized cable that if you make a mistake it could result in a major cable failure. To be quite frank we never wanted the premise tech title it was forced on us we wanted the company to hire more core techs and follow the apprentice / journeyman ratio. But it happened and prem techs are here and you are union and I will fight for you just as vigorously as I fight for core can you say the same ?

To the core tech that posted , the last contract benefit core a lot more , the bread and butter of the Union , but while prem tech are out working late past 4:30 “cause we all know that core stops at 4 and are back at the garage and running out the door at 4:30” you don’t see them whining, I mean I don’t hear them whining about bonded pair installs, and god for bid you learning dtv , core layoffs are moving guys around in different area, so how is that a layoff, also Prem tech was forced to due pair changes , so don’t sit there an act like we are taking your work ,, but we wouldn’t have to do them if the union told the company that, that’s not prem tech job so again it goes back on the Union , so the next time , you are running out the door at 4:30 just sit for a second and think about how many prem techs are still working , but again the Union did the best for core one the last contract , but not prem techs ,but like the president said vote what’s best for you and your family , not because this is the best we can do, but I almost can guarantee you voted yes on the last contract , so I hope you enjoyed that $1000 dollars bonus cause ,I VOTED NO, cause it didn’t benefit anyone , so went it is 358 and I drop that helper ticket in, we will be see who WHINING then

Great news. This means I won’t be unemployed while job hunting. I’m sure upper management could sense that a wave of prem tech would leave due to increased workload and just the overall treatment of their brothers and sisters. Employment at 4.1% means we have choices.

I am a core technician and I feel that this is great news that the union did their job but I'm unfortunately I don't feel that we get the same support from other union technicians when the shoe is on the other foot. It's kind of funny how prem tech cry and whine that the union favors and fight for core techs more than them but it looks as if the union was able to save the prem tech jobs while core continue to lose their jobs. Remember core feel the same way about losing their jobs to prem tech as prem tech feel about losing their jobs to contractors. I wonder how many Prem technicians are going to be a man and woman enough to retract all of their negative statements about the union favoring other job titles over them. Things to make you go hum!!
