AT&T tried to sell it last year but had no offers. So now this is their only other option.

I don't think they are looking to sell, rather IPO for shares isn't it? I think that is the area of Direct TV that actually makes money and wouldn't make sense to sell it.

IPO or sale of DTV Latin America should be a net positive for AT&T jobs in the US longer term. Debt levels need to be rationalized, and selling off DTV LAT AM assets helps not only to raise cash, but eliminates further investments needsnabroad and keeps attention focused more heavily on US based assets.

Directv now number was extremely artificially inflated last quarter. People were signing up to get a free Roku or Apple TV, sales reps were setting up fake accounts left and right due to no chargebacks. If you work for AT&T check reporting for cancel rates, they are staggering.

It is technological displacement. 5G wireless will make data plentiful, and for the first time, cellular will compete with satellite.

AT&T's latest report indicated that they're losing subs from Direct TV while gaining subs on the Direct TV Now or whatever their internet based streaming is called.

5G might just transition video to terrestrial sources. And 5G is the place with the new jobs, if any.
