FirstNet is managed like everything else in the company, poorly with a focus on only short term profits.
They have canned people in IT working on First Net. First Net is not safe.

Att will never directly hire for any sort of tower maintenance or work at all. They want nothing to do with unions at all. We are in the era of the contractor. I can't see how anyone who has experience with att would want to stay here for any position. Run not walk away
This equipment will be integrated into the existing cell towers. Guess who us going to maintain the equipment? Wireless technicians. There won't be 10,000 jobs created they will pile more work on the wireless techs. The site surveys have already been started. When the equipment breaks it will take priority over the other network equipment because the repair will be coded out to the federal government and it will mean tax savings.

I wouldn’t trust At&t with emergency services. When I managed the e911 budget and planning there they always scooped the budget for other things. I was told we won’t fix or service e911 unless it breakdowns and there is litigation.

They will just use a contractors to service them. They will never actually hire for this. Just like their cell towers. At&T is garbage

The company has about 250,000 employees, article says 10,000 jobs should be created.
Although there will be temporary jobs supporting the buildout I don't see a lot of jobs maintaining this effort, and the reason is, artificial intelligence. AT&T is very big on this Software Defined Networking (SDN) and I expect this to be managed more and more by computers employing artificial intelligence.
I expect much of the staff to maintain the FirstNet service to be drawn from the existing pool of wireless workers.
The wildcard regarding employment at AT&T, as far as I can see, is whether 5G is going to mean a nationwide internet offering from AT&T. At some point, wireless bandwidth is going to morph from being a scarce resource into a plentiful resource.
If that happens, the whole wireless side could have opportunities. On the other hand, if wireless bandwidth becomes plentiful, what happens to price support? Disruptive technologies, gotta love it.
