Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

DRUG TEST WHERE YOU WANT TO HAVE CUTS

Do you really want to save money Verizon. Have required drug tests for all employees in the area you want to make cuts. That’s what my previous engineering firm did. They cut almost 20% of the staff due to drug use that violated company policy. That way you keep your clear minded employees. No severance payouts, not retirement benefits, nothing. Straight terminations. Immediately impact the bottom line.

My urine sample when I was a new hire, had stems and seeds in it and I still got hired. Either Verizon doesn't care about a positive drug test or the person reading my results was higher than I was.

Well, even for hocking Hums you don't want someone under the influence. With inhibitions decreased, they might saysomething like "You REALLY don't want this. It's a piece of way over-priced crap that you will never need." Then where would VZ be!

Guess what folks? We no longer drug screen new hires. This new policy went into effect just a few months ago (and would account for the frightfully bad caliber of individuals that show up for New Hire training).

We also don't do random drug screens. We're not flying planes, we're hocking Hums.

So OP, good luck with your idea.

@1jta

And, once again, we get the moment of brutal honesty that shows just why verizon doesnt "randomly" drug test.

OP uses the term "brown skinned people" AND

In a seperate post, OP states he is OK with falldown pathetic angry drunks, since the feds are too, but those who prefer cannabis over jaegermeister need to be fired. Again, the hard liquor and handgun type in this country proving why dying off is necessary for us to progress as a nation. Sigh that there are still david duke types who work for VZ...

As OP, i specifically do want to see brown skinned tested alongside white employees. Call me archie bunker if that makes you liberal pu$$ies feel good. Brown skinned would fail 7 to 1.

Perfect way to reduce headcount NOW.

I’m guessing none of you have ever heard of labor law. Did it ever occur to you that Verizon doesn’t drug test “everyone” because of reasonable suspicion laws? Perhaps the company doesn’t drug test all employees because they would have to offer rehabilitation?

In order to reduce headcount the company only needs to give an IQ test. All prior posters on this thread would get canned.

As for the moron who claimed that all installers are drunk, I am surprised that you possess the brain power to breathe. You should be sterilized by the State.

People always ask the Alcohol question. The answer is no. Alcohol is federally legal. Unless you get caught drinking on the job without permission or driving under the influence, which you can be terminated for even if it’s in your private vehicle. I’m talking about drugs that are federally illegal. That includes “recreational” and “medical” m-r-j-a-a that is legal at the state level. Corporations are protected by federal regulations when it comes to drug laws. I’m talking about “federally illegal drugs” including prescription drug use without a prescription. Booze doesn’t fall in that category. Federal law precedes state laws and any corporation can terminate an employee for violating any federal law, including m-r-j-a-a. I mention m-r-j-a-a because I know that’s going to be the next question with an obvious answer.

I bet a lot of corporate folks would be gone after drug testing if done

@OP, does that mean testing for Alcohol too? If it does the majority of outside plant and installers will be terminated as well as external large business Sales people

Kind of awful trying to find a way to get people fired, but if it keeps others who are more deserving to stay employed then so be it. Actually not a bad idea at all. The useless union would have no say in the matter. “Useless” being the key word.

I agree drug test the whole company and half of the employees are out.

According to Hireright.com, the average cost for a drug test is between $31-$50. So for a group of 20 it would cost $1000 @ $50 each. (Worst case) day you catch one person that makes $50k a year. No brainer.

Thing is, big red might have to terminate more folks than they would want. Maybe it would open the doors again for those who got the ax last week. I think this is a great idea. Wonder what the average cost of a drug screen is. I hope executive management catches wind of this idea.

@Krager, I know of three guys in my group that violate VZ drug policy that survived the recent layoff. Would have rather seen them go than the good guys who lost jobs this week in my group.
