Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

VERIZON WIRELESS LAYOFFS NOT A JOKE

Today I was laid off 5-10yrs many years of service. I am a woman. I obtained a masters degree thru VZW and was working on my 2nd masters. I have obtained the certification that was required for my job and I was STILL let go. I am an AMERICAN and I have worked hard to get where I am!!!! Something, some sort of justice has to be done!! This is discrimination, prejudice and s-xism all rolled into one!!!!

She nails it on the head here. There are no untouchables. Verizon has purged all the Americans.

Unions preventing companies from downsizing is BS. Look at industries like the car industry, garment industry and manufacturing. Unions got carried away with themselves over the years. Huge luxurious HQ's , salaries and demands on companies.

A degree does not protect you,. The fact that you're female does not protect you.

A UNION protects your job. Many of Verizon's Union worker do not have a degree, but they do have a job, WITH A NO LAYOFF CLAUSE,

Life's lessons are learned through experience.

I'm sorry you lost your job.

So is it 5 or 10 years? an MBA and working on a second (that vzw paid for) and yet you can't forms complete thoughts with words? And if you were worth the $8k a year they paid for you to get that MBA you would still be there concidering VZW Women Of Wireless initiative has promoted more incompetent females to leadership across the country instead of putting "The right people in the right places" and now VZW is $hi++ing the bed the old hard charging ways don't work with the new generation and you are all to dumb to do what tenured employees say so we can start getting paid again instead of worrying about how many men and how many women are in what positions and what color they are... So enjoy this $hi+ show company you created me personally I have 10 years experience never called off earned a degree have one hell of a resume from VZW where I hired in with just a high school education have never been threatened with my job never been told I had to do anything shady and never did and now I'm leaving on my terms to go run my own business and the relationships I've built over the years are irreplaceable I'll be leaving VZW with mutual admiration for a company that gave a dumb kid from nowhere a shot at making a life for himself and family and for that I say Thank You you all are too damn angry need to chill and enjoy life don't worry you will get to the right place

Sometimes things happen. There could be some meaning in it, but often it just happens. Ever think that maybe the true test is how we deal with some obstacle in our path? If everything went hunky dory all the time, what would be the challenge? Life would then be all about doing time.

@AAPM. Remember, everything happens for a reason (or god doesn't give you a burden too heavy for you etc). So, those 6 raccoons were MEANT to come in, you just have to figure out why. And if you can't, well, that's ok and happened for a reason too......

And people actually believe this stuff....

"...He was laid off also. He's not a woman and isn't claiming discrimination or anything. He's taking it like a normal person would.... he went deer hunting yesterday for opening day..." - 2qvd

Ahh, killing, the normal person's answer to all of life's woes ;-) Take that you deer! I feel much, much better now that you've met your demise at my hands and your menacing prancing days are over Bambi.

@alzz, when you say, "...when God closes a door, he opens a window elsewhere" it rings so true.

BTW, God, our heating bill is outrageous & six raccoons got in last night.

Please God, this has to stop.

They say that the Queen adores Harry and I doubt she would ever “demand” this – even she has said that she and Harry have a special bond. And even as the little scamp he is (which I love about him- William suits his role perfectly as Harry does his, let the kid have some fun! They lost their mother; William is the perfect heir and very responsible and Harry is the funny rascal of a kid brother and the “spare”; and each enables the other to more fully embrace their respective roles) – they are both more popular and likable than Charles, so either way I love them as they are. And he does look as much like Diana’s brother as he does like Hewitt. What good boys they both are a breath of fresh air to the royal family. Long may they both live and smile.

I was the victim of a RIF in 1998 when GTE merged with Bell Atlantic to become Verizon. Like you, GTE paid for my degree. I moved to the Space and Defense industry and made a lot more money. Then I was the victim of a RIF there also in 2012. So I came back to Verizon as a full time contractor in 2013 making 2.5 times the salary I was making when I left. Keep your chin up. Sometimes when God closes a door, he opens a window elsewhere. Never does any good to complain about it. Sounds like you are prepared with your background. Might be a good thing for you in the long run. Life is a journey and you never know where it's going to take you. I'm a white, male, veteran in my late 50's and like so many others could complain about age discrimination but that is not the case. I'm thankful that I have a job at all when there are many others that don't . Hang in there. Good things will happen.

My neighbor is 55, worked for them since he was around 19 or 20, when they were land line company....hes a cell tech and works on the cell towers. He was laid off also. He's not a woman and isn't claiming discrimination or anything. He's taking it like a normal person would.... he went deer hunting yesterday for opening day. If you have a master degree or wharever, you should have no trouble getting another job

what crap, my entire team including my boss got laid off, we were as hard working as you and Americans too (may be not as white as you). What's happened is the top management does not know jack on what to do and their experiments with acquiring AOL and Yahoo is what's causing the bottom line of the company to go to dogs. We all have a family to feed and bills to pay just like you do, be grateful your masters has been paid for by the company and you probably got a fat severance check and bonus. go find another job with the masters you completed.

What makes you any different from the rest of us? Just because you've done all these things to improve yourself doesn't mean your position adds enough value to the company for them to keep you on. Be glad you've done something with your life so far. Keep up the good work.

Actually.... It's business. Just because you're a woman, you have Master degrees, American, and many years of service doesn't mean that you're exempt from layoffs.

And since u had to tell everyone all the above makes you everything you claimed Verizon to be.

your overqualified educational background was your undoing, placing you on your supervisor's rif list. a supervisor does not want someone working for them that can easily replace them.

Nobody gets it. Nobody asks why Verizon needed to do this.

No, everything isn't ok with the economy, no matter what the media and govt tells you.

ObVIOUSLY things are bad.

It happens to us all, including me. Although I'm a white male, just under 4 years of Service and have a family to feed. There is a severance package and bonus next March, but as long as your education was paid for, be grateful. I have 4 kids mouth's to feed, so be grateful. If you have kids too, then just make sure they get fed and roof over their heads. Sounds like it happened to about 10% of many, many teams.
