Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Verizon had its bases well covered

I was part of a RIF in early 2015, so obviously some time has passed since then. While I did secure a non-management position and elected to stay, I came very close to accepting a severance package that would have paid my previous management-level salary for a total of 40 weeks (along with all benefits) plus my annual STI (bonus). At that point, I had just passed my 20-year mark with the company, hence the 40 weeks of severance. I have heard that packages today might be quite that generous, but an employment attorney I consulted with described my offer as a 'positive outlier', expounding that it was one of the more generous he had seen in some time. I was also advised that, from a legal perspective, Verizon had its bases extremely well covered with regard to the RIF I was part of. I have had many friends impacted by layoffs over the past few years, and the majority of them wound up better off in the long run. I chose not to leave primarily because of the benefits (including 5 weeks of vacation) and the reputation I have built over what is now 23 years and counting. Still, I despise our current culture and hold senior leadership in utter contempt. And I was part of Verizon management for two decades.

Hope this helps is some way. And please know; you are nor alone in this and will ultimately come out okay. Hang in there!

Personal time is paid out in various states. I got my vacation days and my remaining personal days.

Not completely accurate. I consulted an atty with a clear cut case of retaliation thanks to Tampa HR and Supervisor. Unfortunately retaliation cases only payout $40K tops so why bother since an atty gets 40%. I know someone who has a clear cut medical disability that was cut last week and they were stupid enough to let him go and only him in his group, and encouraged this person to seek legal council... so it's subjective and I pray they clean Big Red's clock.

how would you have gotten 40 weeks severance? The max is 35. Unless you are counting unused vacation.

Yeah, don't get me started on lawyers. Want to toss your money out the window...go see an attorney. Believe it or not you can do most of the research on your own and come to the same conclusion as the 'Advice' the attorney will give. If your willing to put in a little effort you can do everything an attorney does and save yourself a ton of money.

On a separate note, I heard the MAX severance package people can get on the Wireless Side was 36 weeks. Anyone know if there is any truth in that?

While I think it's not worth it, if you do want it reviewed, and you have buddies who were RIFd as well, you could share the cost. All the severance documents are the same apart from money/weeks (calculated on the same formula) so give the lawyer one and share the cost. Of course, if one of you has a potential actionable case due to special circumstances then this doesn't apply.

I to was RIF off in Oct 2015. I went to a layer who said he would review the terms for around a couple of hundred dollars. He came back 3 weeks later stating it was legal and charged me a $1,000.

Talk about kicking a guy when he's down. My suggestion to anyone thinking of going to a lawyer save your money.
