Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Age of those laid off?

Do we know if we have another culling of the older folks who earn more due to their years with the company? I know two people who were shown the door today, both are over 50. Is this just a coincidence, or has this been the prevalent age of those who were laid off today?

You should get a document about your group (I think mine was for my SVP org) that lists the ages and band of those impacted (I think I should have also got a doc with consolidated info for those not impacted but didn't)

Our entire team of 7 was laid off today. Only 1 person is under 40. Would love to know if there is a way to get ahold of the ages of everyone affected. My best guess would be that most are over 40, which is a protected age group. If they purposely targeted older employees.....

Our DM

constantly says he wants to get rid of us that have been with the company for many years ( I'm in retail ) and bring in fresh meat.....and many in his stores have heard this....managers included, this sumbitch is going to have a few cases against him if only the old blood goes!

The person I know who got riffed was over 50 with a high salary and not only doing well but the only person doing that job. So OP, not a coincidence. Oh did I mention it was a minority and not the oldest person in their group!

There is never loyalty to employees when $$ are concerned unless you are in a monopolistic market. Don't ever fool yourself that any company cares about you personally. Some do better than others, but they all exist to make money.

I repeat, do not get s---ed in by the idea of loyalty to a company. Do your best but never let your guard down.

I heard some of the people laid off were American citizens.

RIFd at 54 - 30 years with perfect attendance; 3 leading performance reviews in past 8 years, the rest all Ps or whatever else we used back in the day - definitely not a slacker. But guess what? I had a six digit salary. Was very easy to see who the targets were when I received all of my RIF documents.

51 here, 18 years service, all top annual ratings, no HR issues, etc...... Years of service was a high target, but I agree the company will ensure they are within guidelines to avoid a blowback.

My husband was affected by the RIF today. 29 years with the company. 52 years old. Level 2 mgr. We have been through so many of these riffs over the years it was only a matter of time. Definitely target the older more experienced and dedicated workforce. There is no loyalty to employees anymore.

The 2 primary groups of people to layoff are older highly paid people and low performers that are younger.

Not sure if age is a big factor but years of service and years in job role plays a major role. If you have been in your job role for a long time you chances of getting Rif'd skyrocket. I see alot of posts on here stating that only lazy low performers get Rif'd. That is simply not true and shows those ppl have no clue what's happening in their workplace. Everyone I know who has been Rif'd has either been with the company a long time or been in their job role a long time. So please quit calling ppl lazy. These are innocent ppl losing their jobs for no other fault than VZ.

Having been on the receiving end of the Vz send off, and nearing 50, I'd say it's no coincidence. They will throw a few younger folks in there to 'throw off the scent' but mainly it's older, higher compensated individuals. The company is a ship of fools and heading to disaster.

Folks RIF’d are added to a form along with their title, work location, age and filed with the Fed. Helps protect employer with any age descrimination action. HR ensures that acceptable age ratios are used when putting the RIF list together. But yeah, they try to cram as many older workers on the list as possible.

For a statistic ... I am 50 and was just given my notice, I partly attribute it to my age and experience (17 years working here) and them trying to get rid of me before they would have to offer me retirement benefits, but 35 weeks of severance is nice.

That's normally the way it goes..higher the salary...larger the target.
