Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

dying division

If you are in a dying division- think copper - then you will continue to see downsizing as well as tv services. There a two real Departments that make money for the company -

Mobility and Business Services. Mobility is flat at ARPU is struggling due to competition and Business Services has actually seen growth and continued expansion of services - but not TDM stuff.

For the OP: If you are in a dying division- Think.... "copper" (IF YOU'RE NOT INVOLVED WITH DELIVERING CONNECTIVITY TO OUR CUSTOMERS) then YOU might be at risk. Copper is still profitable, just not in the double digit numbers the company has enjoyed for so many years. When copper runs it's course this crazy thing called fiber optics will, and is taking it's place. Fiber optic connections don't just magically occur either. 5G, please, millimeter waves? Anyone who has a basic education in RF knows this is smoke and mirrors for the investors.

FTinNC,

We had FT teams prewire new construction and retrofit existing apartments, but we don’t have any buildings we left copper lines out of completely. We at least run to a demarc / NID.

What city are you working in?

Business is going by the wayside as well. Ever heard of the ARBAE program? I just took a job with an AT&T authorized retailer...I can sell to any business nationwide. Fleet, fiber, wired, mobility...everything. Jobs are being given away left and right.

Copper is not dying, and AT&T has no plans to retire or reclaim the copper network. Signups continue as new apartment buildings through 2017 are still having 300 pair copper pulled into them, in addition to being wired for Gigapower. Construction of new copper might slow down, leading to surplus of Outside Plant Technicians and the Facility Technicians in C&E. But the Facility Technicians working in Cable Repair (I&R) haven't stopped getting overtime since they got hired. Some of whom have done the same job, same title, same location since the 1980's. The can still easily clear $150k/year in overtime (most of them hit at least $120k) just off of the unpredictable nature of repairs.

I am in Business Services - non TDM - and even though our product is growing and makes $, our jobs are being offshored to Philippine contractors.
