Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

These bonuses are blood money

I don't understand how heartless people can be. You are all touting your bonuses when you know people lost their jobs so you can get them.

Over 600 people were laid off by AT&T just as the bonuses were announced. This has nothing to do with tax cuts and everything to do with deceptive and dishonest optics.

I will donate the entirety of what I get. I can't profit from other people's misfortune.

@rjj Possibly, but why can’t it simply be rewarding high performers in turn creating the right incentive structure for a productive A player workforce? It doesn’t have to be politically charged, giving bonuses to top workers they want to retain makes complete sense to me. Be honest if you are a Aplayer and you know it, are you going to stay at a acompany that never lays off D players and compensates then the same?

Because other compnanies are also doing it, i think it’s one of 2 reason:

  1. Companies don’t want the Democrats to retake congress and the Republicans can use this as an example of the tax bill helping others

  2. Companies are doing this in exchange for the Republicans are lowering their tax bill

Make sure you don't claim your donation on your taxes. Wouldn't want to profit from other's misfortunes.

This has to be the most foolish post I have seen in recent days. This is a good example of the progressive ideology that is chocking our nation.

Money is our labor, our property, and represents our individual liberty we enjoy in this country, but it is under assault by the leftist/progressives who have this utopian dream to equalize and strip away our individuality only to end up with a type of Marxist class system.

Sure there are political points to be won by AT&T doing this gesture, but can you blame them? Corporations (groups of individuals working together) have been under assault for sometime now by the special interest groups on the the left. If there is any blood money it would that money these phony groups shake out of Corporate America. Personally I want the business I work for to be as wealthy as possible.

If companies decide to pay a bonus in good will so be it -- it's their business. You know this would be true, if there was no bonus money coming from AT&T all you'd hear from these people is how greedy AT&T is. These people are never satisfied and never will be.

I know my part of the entertainment group got our notices on 12/7...Pear Harbor Day. We have 2 choices. We could leave on 12/28 or stay until 2/5. Our group lost about 20 percent of the workforce that was up for surplus. Surprisingly not everyone in our particular work group was up for surplus.

I am so glad there are 600 less mouths to feed on the island, it means more for me and my family.

I like people like this @OP since they will sacrifice themselves for me and my family .

I bet they put on the air mask after helping cripples when the plane is going down too

First off, all money is blood money so let’s keep it a hundred. If you engage in our society in any way you are part of the blood money system that is fiat currency created from thin air and backed by nothing so that we can all fight like dogs for the things we need and and want with it. That is what is barbaric. The system we have allowed the politicians to create via the federal reserve. Secondly, it’s a just a job. No one is owed anything. No one is any more or less deserving than another. There’s no such thing as I’ve earned it. Or I’ve been here 20 years. You are earning it. Each and every day. Or you are not. Those who do and are... Great! They are likely good people with good reputations and work ethic. They tend to land on their feet inside a company or otherwise. Some people even get a bump up the ladder out of restructures where the lazy fat gets trimmed. Value isn’t just added to a company from someone just lasting a long time and existing. Everyone is responsible for demonstrating the value they add day in and day out. And karma catches up in good for the good and in bad for the bad for the most part. At least eventually. I was laidoff once and was one of the best employees the company had. Two weeks later I was working at a new company with better pay and learning new skills. 6 months later they came calling to get me back but I was all good. So if you are donating your bonus. I’m collecting, send it on over here mother Theresa!

Att also created a whole new department and hired 1000’s so it’s give and take. I’m defending them but jobs were just shifted around

The layoffs would have happened regardless of tax cut. Those who were in the landline business knew it was a sinking ship. I believe the bonuses are a gesture of good will due to tax cuts looking out for corporations. You can donate your bonus however you may wish you hadn’t if your job is also eliminated.

Nobody lost their job in order to generate money for the bonuses. That's poppycock. They're losing their jobs because of lack of work. Namely, the landline telephone business is obsolete and is scheduled to be mothballed in 2020. Who has a landline telephone any more?

The other businesses seem stagnant. Coupled with increasing automation, there is going to be job losses in those businesses.

Prem tech had jobs largely due to a Uverse rollout. But, the rollout is done. But, right now, a Prem Tech has their foot in the door, and can avail themselves of the internal staffing system. And, where they're hiring, they're not firing. Get test qualified for a job that they're hiring into.

This is only the Union job count. On 10/16 in ATO at least 500 were issue Surplus Notice. Their last day was 12/15. Besides I have seen many from other organization have gone through the same process. So the count is much more than the 2000. I would say in Q4 2017 its closer to 4000 . AT&T is trying to fly below the radar with the upcoming TW merger which will be bad news.

Thank you for sharing what a virtuous person you are by donating the money and how awful others are for being thankful for a little extra cash. /s The company has said over the last couple of years we will be in a downsizing mode. You should not be surprised by this news at all.

Accept responsibility for your future and be prepared. It is really easy to blame others, look to yourself and be accountable.

Best of luck to those who are out of a job and those who will lose their jobs in the future. I am likely to join you shortly due to my function being automated. But, I will not be surprised or point blame at others.
