Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Where to go?

Where do people find employment after being laid off from Verizon? Just look at the AT&T or Comcast boards, the situation is exactly the same as here.

Can people who've been laid off (if you still visit this forum) please let us know where these mythical greener pastures are?

You have to look for those greener pastures, they won't come to you. I was hit in April. After months of hard work, this week I got 4 offers, all outside the wireless industry and all much better than my job at VZ. I have accepted my dream job, which turned out to be with one of the energy/oil companies (I never would have though of that industry with my training). I am moving from NJ to Houston. My new job has stock options, a huge cash bonus, a pension that vests immediately, a 401k with better matching than VZ, lifelong medical after 5 years of service, an ESPP and a 4 day work week, plus TX has no income tax and is cheaper than NJ. Think out-of-the-box, work hard on your job search and you'll find those greener pastures. Good luck. You'll have some disappointments, but you will prevail in the end if you play your cards right.

Get out of the wireless industry all together. The market is saturated and all the carriers deal in the same crap. Stupid quotas, fluctuating commission checks, horrible hours, short staff, unethical sales tactics, micro managing among many other faults. You're just going to go from one hell hole to the other.

Take your sales skills if you even have any and go into another field. The grass is indeed greener just not in the wireless industry.

I left VZ earlier this year. I was asked to relocate to stay on and decided not in my best interest to relocate to another state and then in a year or 2 back in same boat. I was in HQ operations and I actually have moved on to the insurance industry. I am still in operations and loving it so far. My previous work experience is valued as I have been asked to lead some projects already. I did take a slight cut in pay, however the offer 401k match and a pension and you do not have to contribute to pension the company does it all so in end it ends up way better than 401k match.

Wireless industry headcount has shrunk by two million in the last 5+ years. ATT Temo and Sprint have all downsized, Vz is still fat. I Suspect Vz will continue to RIF to make their 10b reduction and then tune their workforce accordingly to accommodate 5g, dark fiber and small cell. Then do a massive RIF. Any available jobs going forward will be with the contract shops. Look up “gig economy”. This statement applies to Network, I know nothing about retail/sales.

The "us vs them" mentality is getting on my nerves. I worked at Verizon for 25 years before being laid off in 2015. I honestly believe that so many folks got canned in 2015 to help pay for the Union strike that year. I could be wrong but that's my personal opinion. Also, if so many people have a problem with wireless folks posting on here, why don't they just combine the sites and make it just VERIZON??? It;s ONE COMPANY!

To a large extent depends on what you did at VZ and how transferable those skills are. Best way IMO is to follow up on contacts, especially someone who worked with you at VZ and is now in a hiring-influencing position at another company.

But some aspects of big-company life will be harder to match, my new 401K and medical costs are really bad compared to what they were at VZ.

How you gonna find a job on here? This board is for disgruntled ex wireline employees, and the wireless employees who troll them. Don’t you get it? Your hands quite possibly couldn’t be callused enough to be taken seriously on here. Lol.
