Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

As an American, I hate this for VDSI

We found it way too easy over the years to hate on India because Dey tuk ur jurbs, but the way that so many of them lost their jobs was painful even by Verizon’s standards.

Things will get better.

For past 15 years you all off shore people have been taking over jobs, making Americans jobless. Now see how it feels to get RIF'd !.

Vdsi (Verizon India) has hit rock bottom today....by having appointed a mediocre as head of HR...the standards Has fallen so low...it’s a shame that the standards has fallen to an all time time. The senior management was already operating at a low level now this proves that all is merely a game to trick employees at lower bands. HR is a literally joke in this organization....

I voluntered to go last year , I am glad I did as I went on my terms .I was shocked to hear the way VZW wireless treated their VDSI employees. This is a lesson for so many IT people especially in India. By working extra hours you jeopardized your US counter parts job also. US people got compared with how much VDSI worked. I felt it was inhumane , when I worked in a project where the VDSI would work the entire night to report at 8 am meeting. I hope IT people learn to balance their work. Work is not life. This is a warning for all the people who think if they work 20 hours they can survive. YOU WILL NOT. ONLY YOU WILL LOOSE YOUR HEALTH . I am sure more will come. VZW used to be a great company when I started . Now.. horrible work culture. I

@2pyg: Yes, they should get sympathy, perhaps especially from those of us who have also been RIFd and so know what it is like. You also seem to be attacking those coming to the US, which are not the laid off VDSI workers. And those in VDSI certainly didn't cause the offshoring, that was a decision of the nice US executives. People just look for good opportunities, perhaps displacing "better" candidates, just like any of us do when we apply for jobs.

The layoff's were "Un-Verizon". There was no need to hire external security , intimidation, fake HR personnel in the rooms. The top management should have some decency. I pity for the members who worked late hours and did not get respect.

Curious how it was painful? I am pretty sure losing a job is always painful. I have gotten to know several Indians in my time who immigrated and got advanced degrees here. The bad IT is a product of their school system. They don't teach critical thinking and just teach them how to memorize and slam. Also the bar is much lower for a bachelors in India....so quality is lower as well.

If you are a Verizon Data Services India employee who got riffed. I really hope you dont think you are going to get ANY sympathy from Verizon IT Wireline (former NyNex/Bell Atlantic) RIF'd employees. Karma is a "Witch" ain't it.? We ave all been there, done that over the last 20 years , displaced by Indian employees who CLAIMED to have advanced technical degrees from universities Google can't even find. The bean counters in Basking Ridge NJ chose you all over us because you worked over 60 hrs a week FOR Reduced salary or For Free because you were so happy to be in the United States. Go pound sand ..there is plenty where you live....... If You are NOT VDSI, My Bad, Sorry

1vaz. Agree with your post except that sending to VDSI is not because of having "their" people. Its basically a cost cutting exercise started by the executives.

On shore people don't like the offshore stuff because of self preservation

It's not as simple as 'dey tuk r jobs'. VZW could easily train Americans out of college - hell, even out of high school - to sling code. It's not rocket science. An aptitude test, six months of training, six months of apprenticeship, and "Bob's your uncle". I doubt new American hires in their twenties would even be as expensive as offshore workers. But they chose to take the easy way out. Plus, when much of your IT management is from offshore, then it's entirely reasonable that they would want to share the love and take care of the folks back home. Hell, I'd do it. Anybody would.

But here's the thing - the really, really stupid thing: VZW is a service industry with a very specific footprint. Why would anyone with half a brain, nevermind a conscience, send MILLIONS of spendable dollars outside their service footprint? It's literally cutting their own throats.

Sick, sad, and sort of lame all at the same time.

@QIsq2rp-1vcr..sorry ..it will not matter what you do..VZ has spoken and you are gone. Welcome to the real world... The world that many of us USA employees have endured who lost a job to you. Get over yourselves....you are just a number and not so special...you were just cheap labor whose time has run out......

There is no Union for IT employees currently. There are some discussions of unionizing but no concrete proposals

Also, is it true that VDSI is unionized, under the Union of IT and ITES Employees (UNITE)?

Why does India have an IT Union but we don’t?
