Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

the old Bell days

Gone are the days you would aspire to work for the bell and know once your in your good to roll for 30 proud years and know your taken care of. I luckily hired in 19 years ago, a much different era, a time people needed a house phone and no competition existed and att (ameritech) cared about its employees, sad that anyone i see come into the door today they use this job as a stepping stone to get by until they find a desired career. I’m counting down my days i have 8 years before i can retire i’m not naive to think the company will give me 8 years with the constant downsizing of american employees sad isn’t it.

Prem techs are the future?

Then explain why they took bonded pair installs away from you back in April and gave it to ST’s?

There’s one ST in the Raleigh area (Wendell, technically) that has 2.5 years with the company, next in line has 16. Hasn’t been surplussed yet after 10 quarters.

I think there are just so damn many wire techs it will be cheaper to shrink the workforce and offer the ST’s overtime. You’ve got so much overhead per FTE that it won’t matter if they make $10 more an hour.

All PT will be surplus within the next 6 months. This was and always has been a temporary title. S---s, but true.

To the last reply... did you ever stop to think that we have been dealing with customers in their houses for the last 100+ yrs LOL. All of us with 15-30yrs have installed the original dsl in peoples houses doing the same exact thing prior to your existence and had orders with like 6 jacks and multiple phone numbers on them. Oh and by the way , when we were done with the job it was left as an actual professional install that was done with pride and craftsmanship. Not just thrown in looking like complete sh-- from xbox to modem.

Unfortunately prem techs only exist out of failed negotiations between the company and unions when uverse rolled out. They were a 3 yr temp fix to get the company by until the 2009 contract. I hate to see anyone losing their jobs but i find it hard to feel bad at this point after being surplussed and moved around after 9 1/2 yrs because prem techs were doing all of our work. Its about time the company decided to put an end to their pet project and start letting the techs do their own work again, instead of having to dispacth 2 techs to do it.

PREM TECH who posted this... " I personally can't wait until all of the Dinosaur I&R techs that talk like this are gone one day. Everyone knows the future of this Company is with us Prem Techs. It won't be long until Prem Techs take all of the outside work, that you all act like is so complicated. Time for you IR guys to get out of the way and retire already." I am sorry, but you are not the future. 1000 of you are at risk/surplussed TODAY.

I have worked for Ohio bell for 28 years. I/r.There isn't any reason why a prem tech would know how to locate a end cap or isolate a wet lead cable. If sent to same training and given a chance to do such work , I think they would do just fine. There are people in I/r that aren't as good as others at locating wet lead but are better at other task, a good manager will try to get the most out of everybody!

To Prem Tech. I work with you guys, I am your support. Can you PLEASE take some time, and figure out how to provision a DSL modem? I work on the network. My metrics really do not allow me time to hold your hand on configuring a modem. Call Tier 1. I really don't blame you, I know this company throws people into crap. But do not overestimate your ability to do craft 1 work.

To Prem Tech. I too, at one time, thought that the outside I/R guys had a technically simple job. I drove a short van, and wore khaki pants and nice shoes. I was with Datacomm, and I had a Cisco cert. I configured routers, LAN switches, and basically built networks. After 10 years, I was surplussed into I/R. I then learned, that it the outside plant, can be a beast. It is a craft. So Prem Tech. I dought that whatever you are doing, you are doing well.

Funny Prem techs that moved over to Core MST side found out how much harder our job is than theirs!! It will take over 5years for them to know 25% of what skills we senior MSTs know! They can't even read S/orders or do simple pots work, locate a bad encap splice, def bsw, find a splice marker....what's that?..... don't even talk about locating wet lead cable trouble.....lol us so called dinosaurs have forgot more than you'll ever know....and our work ethic blows yours out of the water!!!! FACTS you idiot punk!

sorry PREM TECH but the other writer is CORRECT...YOU were hired on as DISPOSABLE....like a disposable dirty diaper...and a biodegradable one at THAT!.. You are also USELESS...I work in a call center that assists techs.... why does the company need someone who doesn't even know how to read the facilities off of a ticket??? So ...to the "dinosaur" techs?? YOU are GREATLY appreciated... you come on the line (or chat) and KNOW EXACTLY what you need to do to get the job DONE once and for ALL...these are the REAL techs that keep that company running..."prem tech"...REALLY? you're just a "back up" that puts a "band-aid" on the job until a "REAL" tech comes out and fixes what YOU just messed up... so go SIT DOWN somewhere...oh, and thank you for contacting at&t... enjoy your day!

Any Prem Tech that thinks they are the future, is deluding themselves.. You MAY get more group 1 craft work in the interim, but you were created as a disposable workforce. AT&T doesn't want you, either.

Pacbell was the same, they truly cared about customers and employees alike!! Customer service was real not the phony we care of the evil T.... now it's all about numbers, spread sheets and the money! Cheaper to lose a customer than take care of them! Sad way to run a company!! Most of the people with 18-25years are counting the days to leave this Hell Hole asap....
