...or office desk hoteling. Can ANYONE cite a source where this was successful, improving productivity, communications AND morale? When I need to talk to someone face to face in the office its nice to know where they sit, novel I know. This may work with on the customer service floor, but it’s an absolute productivity and morale killer amongst the Engineering and Analyst types. Thoughts?

I can't comment on the duct, but if the cubicles have low walls where someone sitting at a desk is looking straight at another employee sitting at their desk, then yeah it is essentially the same thing. Distraction is a problem. For some reason the invading culture doesnt recognize that fact. The old world style of having rows of desks facing one direction and a manager at the other end of the room monitoring the sea of employees is an abomination. Its what you typically see in old movies from the 40's where the characters are in a police room or newspaper office. Its unbelievable.

It is a HORRIBLE practice. I simply cannot concentrate in a loud, open environment like that. We have people that have chosen to drive an extra 30 miles (one way) to work to avoid having to use the open table environment. And meeting 'areas' that are just a table put in the middle area? Seriously? The environment certainly hasn't helped the productivity of our group..

No I was referring the 2 guys in the truck. I guess after the application they were thinking what to do next or maybe the truck broke down. You never know.

I saw a group of retail people standing at the same counter for, like, eight hours.
Saw a Verizon truck in front of the Kingsbridge (on Jerome ave) in the Bronx McDonald's a few weeks ago. Both guys sitting in the front seat.A few hours later I passed by same truck and the guys still sitting there. I know there's a Verizon garage in Jerome ave. I guess they wanted to guard the Restaurant.
I recently saw an article, perhaps in the WSJ (but I’m not sure), that outlined all of the negatives of open tables and hotel seating. The bottom line was that what was once hip and trendy 20 years ago is now an acknowledged liability both from a productivity and morale perspective.
No one should be surprised that VZ is 20 years late on this one, just as it is with just about everything, including Lean Six Sigma ( another ‘90s trend that has been proven a failure), Yahoo and Go90.
It sends a message....It’s done to make the employee feel unwelcomed and temporary. It also saves the company fortune on banker boxes. Nothing to pack on RIF day....just walk us to the door. They can get their post RIF staff call/meeting out of the way before lunch and still have time in the afternoon to get in 9 holes. It’s also a way for Verizon to vet anyone suffering with adult ADHD. Taking them out of their cubes and placing them in an open, noisy, pit style “collaborative” environment guarantees to set those folks up to fail.
Here is the alternative work strategy for wireless employees:
Work on finding an elderly person to sell unneeded stuff to (fleece time)
Work on writing silly posts on this site (meeting time)
Work on complaining about management getting paid to greet customers ($hits getting done time)
Work on persuading mommy to let me stay in the basement rent free until they dies so you can get the house (preparing for the future time)
Here is the alternative work strategy for wireline employees:
Work from bucket truck (sleepy time)
Work from bar (meeting time)
Work from doughnut shop ($hits getting done time)

Idiot. Wireline is dealing with this Alternative Worksplace strategy, not wireless. I agree that it does seem to have a negative impact for analysts.
