Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I used to have dignity working here

When I stared with this company the customers showed me respect. We wore suits and ties to the store. Then it was shirts and ties. Then just collared shirts. Then for the last three years I’ve been dressing like I work at Burger King with this ridiculous “smart attire.”

Customers would never dare talk to me the way they do now back when I was wearing a suit and a $1000 watch. I used to have customers sign real, legally binding contracts on actual paper. Now they are scribbling with their finger on a tablet. My commission checks were never under $6000, now they are never over $2000.

And now layoffs are coming? Not only has this company robbed me of my dignity (when they turned me from a high laid man of accomplishment into just s retail slug), now they are going to walk me to the door any minute.

What’s next? Solar cells? Insurance? CARS?!?! Verizon has done nothing to prepare me for this fate.

Dress for the job you want not the job you've got!

If you look respectable, you are often respected. Look the part and you will have an edge. Clothes don't make the man (or lady), but they sure help with first impressions. Now what to do with that neck tattoo.

"Customers would never dare talk to me the way they do now back when I was wearing a suit and a $1000 watch."

I wonder.. You were still "just" a sales clerk in a retail establishment. Depending how long ago that was, it might have been that cell phones were still a bit special, and you got the (perhaps more polite) early adopters and wealthier customers. Now cell phones are commodities, everyone has one and there is no awe attached to the person doing the selling. Are people always polite to suited car salesmen?

Dignity is internal not from watches and cars. Best of luck if you stay or go but please reconsider your worth vs. the worth of your possessions.

Wow what empathy all you Verizon employees have. I hope the initial blogger doesn't jump off a bridge!

Gosh, I can't imagine why a racist f$#k like yourself remains unemployed. Your sunny disposition just SCREAMS "hire me!"

Quit spending hours in front of the tv watching Fox News' conspiracy theory network and stop being a "taker." Become a productive member of society...even if that means getting a job that's "beneath" you.

Fun fact: Paz means peace in Español. Ironic. I bet "Miranda" has a lot more of that than you at this point. Good luck to you sir.

I left in 2015 on a RIF I wanted. Glad I left. But while I was there I took advantage of the 401K and banked 16% of my income including the after tax. I left with $1.5M. If you were buying $1000 watches and not preparing for your financial future or using tuition assistance to improve your education for a promotion or job change, you were doomed from the start. You seriously need to look at yourself and stop playing the victim.

What a loser another retail lifer crying that the gravy train is over.

What did you do with your years of $6,000 commission checks? Piss it all away on $1,000 watches?

Don't worry, there are plenty of other moronic retail jobs where you can wear a suit and tie. Try Men's Warehouse. What an idiot...

Sorry. If you were here when we wore suits and were STILL a RSR (Solutions Specialist), then you had more than enough time to promote.

If you were pulling down $6k in commissions, you were, no doubt, a shark.

You probably had opportunities to promote, but blew it off because you wanted those fat paychecks.

Now, here you are, years later, with what looks like a $hit resume to a recruiter at another company.

Started as a RSR...worked 10+ years (I'll assume), and ended as an RSR.

Hopefully you saved some of those $6k checks. No...wait...you were busy buying bull$hit like $1k watches (dafuq?)

"Verizon has done nothing to prepare me for this fate."

It's not their job to prepare you, you should have taken advantage of the many improvement courses they offered online. Too late now. Good Luck

well maybe instead of wearing 1,000.00 watch, you could have invested it. - also I am glad you are getting walked out. Based on your timeline, you have been with Verizon for over 10 years - all in retail sale. No career goals?? oh yeah - you need that to be provided to you as well since its Verizon that needs to provide you that option---- well hope you have taken advantage of the tuition assistance --- not holding my breath on that as well - you have that "Everyone owes me something" ora to you.

Get you head out of your a-- - respect yourself, be accountable and for god sake don't buy 1,000 dollar watch.

What a lame post. Reminds me of the guy riding the ferry on Disclosure.

“You don't see it coming. You go along,

and then one day there's no room.

Boom. No more room for you.

Smaller, faster, cheaper, better.”

"Verizon has done nothing to prepare me for this fate..." Therein lies the rub, my friend.

I have a problem with anyone looking to a company, or in this case, a monster corporation, as the giver or taker of anyone's "fate." If you've done that, then you're the s---er. You are the one to blame, not Verizon. We need to start seeing things as they are, not as we wish they could be. Verizon, unions (or any corporation or entity), and are NOT the answer. The answer is YOU. What are YOU willing to accept? Or deny? Or abdicate? Or sacrifice?

Take what you've learned and leverage it. You don't need Mother Verizon's permission to be a success. Turn the tables. Take what you've been given and say "adios" to the Big V. In fact, do all great things in spite of her.

Verizon has provided you a job, and a lucrative one at that, great benefits including tuition reimbursement, and much more. You have remained in the same position for more than a decade it sounds, and not looked to broaden your horizons, improve yourself, or look for additional opportunities. Remember the old saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."

Is it Verizon's fault you haven't done anymore to prepare yourself for the future? Jobs come and go, customer demands change, and so must you. NYC Taxi Drivers may be fuming over uber, but is it Yellow Cab's fault? Maybe, but its because of a change in customer demand that they did not try to own first. Block Buster employees everywhere were without jobs, but consumer demand was download and Redbox made that a possibility. Just as consumer demands change the job landscape, you have to continue to improve to align yourself with the future.

If the commotion does not result in a change for you, be aware that all businesses are changing to better align with customer demand. If you don't have that skill set, take advantage of the VZ offered benefits to better yourself. If layoffs come, they're a part the world that all companies have to align with, a constant change in customer demand. No one is out to get you, and if you feel that they are, you're wrong. You have to make yourself marketable, develop needed skill sets, and define your own future, because no one will hold your hand through personal development.
