Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

Overnight / Night Managers

Overnight are going to be split into two stocking shifts 2pm-10pm and 4am-12pm or something similar.

Night Managers coming to days. Was told this last week.

So if I'm really looking at this what will the need for a night manager on days be? There are already general merchandise managers and if they do hire a grocery manager then what?

If a night managers shift is moved to days can't they file unemployment based on a restructure? As a night manager I plan my life around this and have nobody else to pick up kids and take them to and from their functions.

My fault for investing long term in a company that doesn't give a crap about me.

Back in the day Sams had no night crew and the morning people worked in one of the 3 departments on days. Is this the way it is being done. They will be in Hardlines, Center or Groceries. The overnight manager was actually the receiving manager and he/she would be the opening mgr each morning.

This would only work if the clubs did not open until 10 am like back in the day. Otherwise you are gonna be blocking off 3-4 sections of the club at a time with a lift team.

I’ve said it for years. Something that takes 5 minutes for one FL driver to do on overnight takes 25 minutes to do during the day. Calling for a driver(if one is actually in the building), getting 2 people to spot, forcing your way through the members on a busy Saturday, blocking off aisles, etc.

The only thing the test model improves is to have more associates out on the floor for the member. Unfortunately if it’s overnight people going to days you are gonna be scraping the bottom of the barrel associates who can hardly walk and breathe at the same time, let alone stock and help Members.

Po5dqzM-4shc. it’s entirely possible. it’s because it’s new to you and you don’t like it. i get that. when sam’s first became sam’s there was no night crew and costco does not have one. before they ever put a program out for test it’s been thought out thru and thru. test most always means done deal. now that doesn’t mean down the road they decide we screwed up the old way is better

In some clubs the overnight diff. Is more then just .50 . Some clubs are 1.50 , now that's alot to lose to start off with then you probably drop down a level and ohh yeah go from full time to part time. So now your in a part time position with no health insurance ....

Don't definitively say THIS IS HAPPENING when it's a test program at a pilot club. If you've been with this company any reasonable amount of years, then there's a good chance you've been through some kind of test program yourself and maybe, just maybe, you've noticed that they don't always pan out.

Operationally it doesn't make much sense to structure two separate shifts primarily during our daytime hours for the sake of running freight from the dock, dropping pallets, and stocking merchandise. Over 70% of this proposed time is during business hours when we've got members in the building. The company's forward facing policy is so pro-member service right now that to put something into place that would disrupt member service for almost 12 hours is ludicrous. And when you consider that the company is so heavily focused on trying to compete in the digital space with a site like Amazon, we need all the best member service we can get. This move doesn't make any sense for our company and is likely just a test to see if we'd even remotely be able to pull it off successfully, which I seriously doubt we could. The company isn't going to shoot itself in the foot, especially over a mere 50 cent hourly differential.

Remember that this site is purely generated by anonymous users. Take everything you read here with a grain of salt and don't buy into scare mongering. Not every change that has been mentioned here has happened and this one strikes me as being very farfetched. It should for you too.

It sounds like your a test club but I do see it happening . They have already Given more responsibility to the APM they are now over hardlines giving the hardlines manager center section and from what I’ve heard they’ve given the membership manager the groceries position also So they are running memberships and groceries. So I do you see the giving or splitting the night shift into two timeslots but don’t know when it would happen .

When will this be taking effect for nights? Also will they only have pt and ft will be let go ? I can't stop thinking. Changes have been told to cash office and our hr person. I'm waiting to hear our news on nights.

It's a brain dead idea. It takes sometimes 5 hours to run 2 DCs water trucks and paper to the steel. We are a test club but they told us all clubs will be going to this soon. I never really understand the Costco comparison. Don't we always strive to differentiate ourselves? Why do we have to follow and not lead? Just an excuse to cut jobs. Maybe I can perform so bad they fire me and I can collect unemployment.

I think overnight manager could stay if membership manager is leaving. Or maybe they will open up grocery manager so night manager can apply. Sorta like they did with the new Fresh Manager job. They made all the current fresh managers apply for it ..they didn't automatically just give it to them.

Are you a test club for this or are all the clubs doing this at the same time? And if you don't mind me asking what Market or state are you in? I am a receiving clerk in a high volume club and know changes are happening but was just curious if you can share more about what will happen. Thanks for any info!

It's actually genius Costco does it but since Costco has done it for so many years they've adapted to it

It's happening in our club on the schedule starting October 7th. It's not really the point of changing shifts, I mean it is a life change and anybody who has worked it knows that. It's more of the fact of how it was presented vs how it is really playing out. When we were told, we were given a choice of which shift we wanted. Then midweek we were told that not enough people wanted the 2pm shift so now we all are pretty much splitting up and working both shifts. 3 days on the early shift and 2 on the late shift. Or something similar. I am not whining and lucky to have a job, but as a manager for how long? The associates coming to days now and the possible moves in Receiving make me wonder? May empty out the 401k and do my own business or something is yet.

How is that going to work with high volume clubs? Plan to slot 3 dcs, 2 water trucks, and a paper truck with members in the store?
