We are Back Baby! We Drove Amazon Out of College Textbooks

http://www.recorder.com/Amazon-to-end-contract-with-UMass-Amherst-13361280

After just three years on campus, the retail behemoth Amazon will end its run as the virtual textbook store for the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The university received its guaranteed commissions of $375,000, $465,000 and $610,000 in the first three years of the contract with Amazon, according to university spokesman Daniel Fitzgibbons. Commissions have not exceeded those guarantees, Fitzgibbons added, though he declined to speculate on why Amazon ended their deal with UMass Amherst.

Amazon did not respond to a request for comment on the reasons for its decision to opt out of its contract.

Follett kicked their butt.

Amazon was smart to opt out... Follett will never be back to its glorious days of the the 2000s and early 2010s.... not while always being a day too late and a dollar too short, and always jumping on the band wagon after the fact, instead of being g pioneer!

Books are still cheaper to rent on Amazon so I don't know what you all are so happy about.

Realistically Amazon just decided to cut out the school. Why pay commission to the schools when they were just getting all the business on their website. Why go to a brick and mortar when Prime gives you home delivery for free. Follett sure as hell cant beat their prices. So in the end Amazon realized they were more profitable not being on campus and not paying the commission. Don't think Amazon thinks Follett is a threat.

Follett hasn't known How to Do It in 4 years. Nov 2013 to be exact. That's when the PURGE started.

What you mean is we use to KNOW how to do it and be profitable. Starting with MLS, Follett laid off and forced out all those that knew how to run college book stores and be profitable and the focus became making the family stock more valuable. Now we know how to hire high priced executives who know nothing of the college book industry but can sit in the Ivory tower, lay off customer facing employees with decades of knowledge in college book store operations and micro manage from afar.

Follett DOESN'T know how to do it. Just look at their web business and order fulfillment. You think brick and mortar will save them? What about when they lose the ND contract eventually ? That's a big chunk of change.

You just don't understand. Our industry is different, we are not traditional retail. Follett has managed college bookstores for 100 years. We KNOW how to do it and be profitable. Chegg gone! Amazon gone! Nebraska gone! Competitors came in and priced unrealistically not understanding the textbook industry and related risks. This is what you call an industry shake out. The players that don't know what they are doing lose money and eventually exist the market.

So Amazon dumps a unprofitable account (smart business move) and Follett is back. Wow, we may be seeing the flaw in the leadership logic in the Ivory Tower! What's that big L on your forehead mean?

That would be pretty stupid for Follett to consider picking that account back up. Then again, Follett revels in dumb ideas.

Amazon looks up to no one and they've determined there isn't enough margin in the text busines. I'm not sure that's winning.

On a side note, Colleges and universities ought to pay attention. The bookstore is dying and its annointed replacement just got out of the business.

So now follett can sign up and run yet another bookstore that loses money. Big victory.
