It can get rough
Out since 12/31/15, after 20 years of service. Didn't think it at the time, but it was the best thing that could have happened to me. I now work for a Municipal Electric Utility and actually wake up looking forward to my day instead of dreading it. Good Luck, much better things ahead.
I too was hit in May. Life's good, better, and goes on.
@3wlr at 58 you're a better option than some drunk, cochstrong millenial with a man-bun and a "I'm owed something" attitude.
Conventional wisdom still estimates that it takes ~ 1 month per $10K of salary to find a job. Obviously varies on geographical area and field. I was offered a job about 4 weeks after my RIF for about 20% less than I was making, and took it just to avoid more stress of job searching (at 58 not so easy to get a great job with all the keen, cheaper and more capable youngsters about!)

Possibly different in VzW (although I doubt it) but people really do get chosen for "no-fault" reasons. One of my friends was laid off a while back, returned after the severance period as a contractor, and has just been given an employee position. Yes, not common, but happens.
That said, you certainly shouldn't plan on being able to be rehired, if headcount reduction is going on, you are not in a position of strength...
Yes it is very hard out there (RIF'd Dec.2016), Severance runs out real quick , so you may have to accept pay below what you were making at VZ to put food on the table and pay your bills. If you are over 50 yrs old, it is worse.
There is life outside of VZW. I would encourage those who are struggling to find jobs to first make sure you are prepared for the job interviews you are getting. If you were strong in your role at VZW and are presenting those results in your interviews in the right way, then you should be receiving offers for jobs.
To the ones on here who suggest going back to VZW after the 6 months waiting period, that scares me. For one, do you actually think you were laid off by random? We all were selected for a reason and smart people know what that reason was. Anyone who would remotely consider going back to VZW obviously has no clue why they were layed off.
Life after can be 50lbs if stress relief off your shoulders.
OP - If it is that bad, go get a solutions specialist job at a Verizon store. Or go get a retail job at T Mobile or Sprint or AT&T. They are always hiring. Yeah it's a $hit job but it will pay the bills.
Otherwise if you are looking for a handout, go get on food stamps and welfare like the countless other losers in this country. It sounds like you would fit right in.

I think qlc was just trying to offer words of encouragement. And yes, be glad you got of the SS Verizon before she goes under. I hope things get better for the OP. (I got laid off in 2015....)

I've been out since May as well. Been enjoying life.
I got hit at the same time and am also still laid off, although I’m actively interviewing. Keep your chin up. I’ve heard from others who will laid off before me that things get better. Soon, you’lol look back and be glad you are out of the s—t storm of a company.
