Yes I know the feeling I was surplused two times.... ... with no representation from the fine CWA.... both times in bed with the company.... a waste of money right there... I got out of the union and have never made a smarter choice....

Hi all! I was thinking I should get out of the CWA too and get a job in the CATV industry. There is no union there to hate so I would make half my current pay, have worse benifits, and wouldn't have a pension to worry about. What do you guys think? Should I do it!
You are correct, to join the CWA, you simply sign a card. If you want to resign, you have a small window once a year. In the SE, we must send a certified letter to the CWA within 7 days of our contract anniversary(August 8th) If you are 1 day late or they find a "mistake" in your letter Payroll will keep taking the dues out of your check. I have never heard of any organization that makes it so hard to get out, what is the CWA afraid of?
i wish i could leave the union, but i'm required to keep paying dues so its pointless.
Also this union depend of the local, they play the game, if you are no a popular dude they won't do anything for you !it is all about the dues you pay

So you have 30 plus years yet were surplused? Doesn't make any sense to me since it's done by seniority. Unless you are just trolling the board. The Union doesn't surplus anyone, they only protect the folks when the Company does. Really crappy of you to take advantage of the protections the Union offers without paying dues tho. Did you ever think the Company like to get rid of an old, unproductive, expensive worker like you without those contract protections you enjoy? Probably not, but I could tell that from the intelligence level of your post.
I got out of the union a few years ago, and do not regret my decision. The only regret I have, is paying all those union dues for the past 30 years. I sure wish I had all that money back! We used to have a great union 25 years ago, but not anymore. Our contracts keep getting worse and worse. Every time "negotiating" for a new contract comes around, they talk big and make you think they will actually fight for their members for a change, but we always end up with a bad contract. Good riddance!

Feel for all you folks and what you're going through. Voluntarily retired in 11' as an OPT and have never regretted.it. Lasted 5 yrs. after at&t bought Bellsouth. I had a belly full because of all the changes they made. Ridiculous time increments for tasks was the worst. Putting GPS units in the vehicles so they could spy on you all day s---ed as well just to name 2. They view employees as bodies that can be replaced fast and easy. Talked to a former co-worker yesterday that told me his landline had been out over 2 weeks. at&t is all about profit and nothing else and will never be on a list of best places to work. They are way too big and may be about to get bigger. (a)a--holes (t)today & (t)tomorrow. Upper management is for sure.
