Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Surplused!

After 20+ years I was surplussed! I moved to keep job with Cingular to a location where job market is lacking jobs and pay rate is just above minimum. I have been looking for employment for 10 months with no prospects. Sad to be going through this. I thought when I went to work for BellSouth, that I was in for career and would retire when the time came. I showed up every day and never had any sort of performance issues from any supervisor. All reviews were ME or CE. I took on everything I was asked to without complaining and always became the group SME.

I also lived in Dallas back in the 80's and after 4 years could not wait to come home. So I understand what you are saying about living there. Just horrible to relocate then be surplussed, someplace you would not have selected. I was a non-union employee so that had nothing to do with my surplus. Two co-workers of mine, each with 37 years apiece, were also surplussed at the same time I was and both were non-union.

As has been posted before, if you are a craft employee you will be surplused by seniority, period. Your job performance, MSOC score, or attendance mean nothing. This is true for any union and takes away the incentive to do anymore than the minimum.

I was in a situation similar to Broken. I was relocated to Dallas by AT&T and laid off less than 1 year later. I have found out that the company gets massive tax credits to relocate people here. Life in Dallas is a struggle: extreme heat (people don't go outside, more than 100 degrees in the shade, day after day), high property and sales taxes, high automobile and home insurance rates, one of the highest air pollution cities in the US, high crime, congested highways, DART is a joke (slow public transportation marked by high crime, recent beating of man, no cameras in the train or at the stations), no culture, lack of museums, lack of nightlife, no natural beauty, no outside activities(such as hiking and biking, in short, there is nothing to do, it is an unhealthy lifestyle), and the list goes on. I am saving money to dig myself out. Extremely sorry i was fooled to relocate to Dallas.

I know many managers with 20 plus years near or at retirement age. They would leave now if they were offered a severance package. That makes room for those who want to stay.

I was in a customer care call center. I got the standard 60 day notice in October when there are no jobs open due to the multiple surplusses going on and year end coming up.

AT&T is no longer a career company. It’s constant worrying about whether or not you’ll stay employed and what’ll happen to your life when the inevitable happens. But it’s not isolated to T unfortunately that’s how the job market is now. There’s no longer a “30 and out” like there once was.
