Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

Elimination of overnight shift ??

Sams is currently in the process of testing out a new program where the overnight shift is eliminated completely. My understanding is that this is how costco operates, so of course we are going to test it out as well because we wanna be just like them. There are curretly 2 clubs that i am aware of testing this out. 1 here in nevada and another in Kansas city. The stocking shifts as they are being called are being solit up into 2 shifts. There will be a 4am-12;30 pm shift and a 2:30 pm- 11 pm shift. Current overnight workers will be given the option of choosing which shift they want. All remaining openings for these stocking shifts created by people who choose to leave will be filled by new hires. This does include receiving also as there will be nobody in the buildings between 11pm - 4am. Cant imagine that this can possibly work or be efficient stocking while the club is open, but hey, looks like it may happen anyway. Goes right along with all te other strange moves they are making.

Just moved to 3-11:30 shift in extremely busy Secaucus NJ club. Impossible to pack out with members swarming constantly. If you're supposed to be #1 why copy #2? Also see associates with 1-2 years getting hefty raises while my 15 years got me 37 cents. WTF? I'll be quitting very soon.

I'm in Mankato, MN and we got the news last night. The details were fuzzy but by end of July it should all be rolled out. I just hope they don't decide to get rid of us completely.

So I want to know wether or not we do have the option of picking the shift we want because I am hearing rumors that we will be flip flopping between 4am and the closing shift every 30days if this is true its Insane! What kind of life will you have? Not to mention if you have another job or kids etc.... Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.

Anyone who has already transitioned to the new shift layout, did they offer a payout option since they eliminated our position? I work this shift because it’s the only one I can work. 🙄

This post is 4 months old now. Has any other club also gone to this yet? I’m sure it’s coming at my club so I’m just wondering how well it is actually working out.

To take that a bit further.. say all the "slackers" take nights.. focus on running the dock and pretty much leave ALL stocking the mornings. What once was a cohesive unit and in many stores a family gets to play the blame game on why things aren't up to par.

Sounds good on paper.. really is going to depend on A. Store volume.. some clubs just do way More than others. B who's your evening crew.. how much are they getting done and how much do they decide to leave for the morning crew. C. What sort of unreasonable expectations are going to be put on each crew by the powers that be who have no clue how much actual time and work goes into getting ANYTHING done.

Alright, my club begins this next week... me being the over night lead I will work 3pm-11:30pm... my manager is 4am-2pm. (O/n merch is 4-12:30) so I have the exact guidelines on how this works. The evening shift takes ALL the high volume items such as waters/soda/juices, paper, and majority of hardline (paper goods, laundry, janitorial, and dog food) the morning shift pretty much handles everything, the pick list is made by the 3-11:30 shift only and before the evening shift leaves we drop all pallets in which the 4am shift will need to stock before 7am, and the 4am shift back stocks (in rec) what the 3pm shift will pallet jack out.. no with recieveing only 1 associate will be unloading trucks 7-10pm then it becomes a group run until clear. (All lift drivers run freight).. the 4am shift has 2 or 3 more associates than the 3pm shift as well.

I have heard nothing about any of these overnight changes, and I'm the overnight lead at my club. Then again, communication is abysmal at my club and I never get told anything until its too late

There won't be an overnight shift, but they will still be stocking and such. So who will be their manager and TL? Is it going to another manager or will overnight manager just move to days?

When I started in receiving 18 years ago, everyone came in at 4:00 am. No night receivers at all.

This could be true, yesterday Friday I walked in the managers office and a manager showed me what is the Final 2017 new tier for all associates in the club. It starts off with managers and then to leads and their departments. Manager pointed out that receiving day lead and invoice clerk were not under any of the tiers. Final hit that those positions will be eliminated. Has anyone else seen that new structure in their managers office?

Yep. We unloaded everything in day time. Paper, water, coke, DC trucks, fresh, mclanes. But the shift started at 3am. Everything old becomes new again. Another reason they'll be able to eliminate receiving lead & clerk. Makes regular receivers available to handle keying.

Overnight stocking in Sam's is not that old. When I started all receiving was during day. Costco has always done day receiving. Never overnight. And it helps that they don't open till 10.
