The only reason I'm still at Intel is because I love Portland. There are really no other "decent" options here for a hardware/ASIC/FPGA design engineer. Small pockets of other companies, but Intel's by far the biggest and most employable. Amazon in Seattle may be an option, but they have their own horror stories.
It's hard because there are really a great number of people at Intel who I enjoy working with and are extremely bright. They're all just as frustrated with the lack of direction of the company from management, the constant offshoring, and products failing due to higher up incompetence. Intel's got the resources and branding to truly do something wonderful like back in the PC era, but we just keep on throwing darts at every new fad out there.
